Outstanding movie with excellent performances by Judi Dench and Steve Koogan. I can see at least two Oscar nominations. It brought tears to my eyes.

sadly...

Because it is a low budget film that deals with something a lot of people want to forget or even deny ever happened it might get a nomination but to win?
If it does I won't eat my hat but I will make an extra donation to the hatbox.

My guess is that Gravity will wipe the floor simply because Hollywood needs a big blockbuster to get the accolades that multiple Oscars will give it. This will keep Hollywood making the endless prequels and sequels that appeal to an ever diminishing group of people but as far as they are concerned they are doing the business... i.e. making sure that NO, repeat NO film ever makes a profit according to their obscene accounting rules.

Actually, I think that 'The Book Thief' could get a few nominations. That's my opinion though.

I enjoyed Philomena more despite its sadness, it felt more real.

The story of Walt Disney talking PL Travers into parting with the film rights to Mary Poppins always felt a bit stagey despite good turns by Tom Hanks and Emma Thompson. The show stealer was Colin Farrell as Helen's (PL Travers) alcoholic, consumptive father. He's also quite a hunk opposed to Tom Hanks rather bloated Disney with a dodgy hairpiece.

The story isn't about saving Mr Banks but about closure on Helen Goff's (PL Travers real name) relationship with her father (Travers Goff) and her loss of him. It also gave some insight into what drove Disney and the problems he had delivering newspapers as a child. It's a well made film but at times it felt longer than it needed to be.

The closing sound track is very interesting.
