I wasn't previously aware of this, but courtesy of Wikipedia's Main Page, I've discovered that today is (or has been for those in UTC+3 or greater) National Coming Out Day.
It is apparently "an internationally observed civil awareness day celebrating individuals who publicly identify as bisexual, gay, lesbian, transgender–coming out regarding one's sexual orientation and/or gender identity being akin to a cultural rite of passage for LGBT people. The day is observed annually by members of the LGBT community and allies on October 11."
So if you weren't already aware of it, consider yourself informed :)

High School
My high school when i went actually celebrated this. we still had school but what the students and teachers did was to take a vow of silence for the entire day. it would start in the LGBT club room in the morning and would end in the room at the end of the day. the vow of silence could be taken by those who are LGBT, those who know someone who is LGBT, and those who support the community. you got a not to give to your teachers to let them know what you were doing. My hand always cramped up that day before i got my laptop as i would write out my answers to teachers questions if no one else knew the answer.
I think what made it even better is that we actually had several teachers who were LGBT. Made the school very tolerable.

Been out!
My lovely wife and I have been out for more than 37 years! Eek! That's like forever!
We never tried to hide it. Each of us met our spouse's coworkers. We went to each other's gatherings. We brought our spouses to husband-and-wife gatherings. We socialized just like regular people.
I guess, at this point, we're the old, gay broads, but back some 35 years this was a BIG thing. It's gotten better, though. At least now, the State recognizes that we can be married. And, the Fed recognizes it, too, granting the same tax benefits to us. Now, if we can just get all the retirement, death benefits, survivor benefits, etc. we'll be just like any other old married couple.
As far as anyone who knows us might say, "And, ...? So ...?"
