Thickness of an image

People don't interact with each other, not really. We interact with an image we have built up in our minds. We see each other but we don't. We build this picture of what and who a person is and every action of that person, every word they say, is filtered through what we expect. Dirty Jew, stupid black, arrogant cracker, nasty queer, stereotypes are the foundation of these images. Large brush strokes we impose on people and of which we expect them to adhere, even if we must change the facts to make them do so. And it's not limited to just these stereotype foundations, everybody does this to every person they know, even those they are most intimate with. How much better would the world be if people put aside these images of one another and listened to what was truly said, saw what was truly done? But no, it is too hard to reevaluate a person everyday, to look with fresh eyes at their actions, to give them the benefit of the doubt. It is far easier to see them as a simple image, with each thought and impulse preformed to fit with what is expected. So much simpler to live with hate and anger than to break through that image and see the person for who they truly are, to put your mind within their body and look out to see the image they in turn have made of you. In this carnival fun house of a world we are alone surrounded by the distorted reflection of ourselves, never able to see past the mirrors that encircle us to the people on the other side, separated by the thickness of an image.
