I just had the coolest thing ever happen. In fact, it may take days for
me to put it into perspective. I had to run down to a little store, because
we were out of cat food, and despite what I wrote to Sue Brown, I have
to bribe my cats with food so they'll like me.

Anyway, I'm standing there, waiting for my Pizza to be cooked (Because
I have to bribe my wife so she'll like me.), and I'm listening to this nice
couple from down in CT, who are waiting for the same thing -- Hot Pizza,
and the meaning of life.

Now I didn't hear the first part of the conversation, because as you all
know, I'm a real misanthrope, and I hate people; but, I come to realize that
they are talking about this woman reading stories on the computer. The man
goes on about how silly it is for her to be reading things that make her cry,
so much.

(Of course, as soon as I hear that, my little ears begin to swivel independently,
probably because whenever my wife and kids eat all the pizza, I have to poach
the cat food for my dinner.)

Sure enough, about ten seconds later, I hear the words Samantha, and hospital,
and now a little girl...

I'm dumbfounded.

I started to laugh. I'm pretty sure that they think I've gone nuts right
there in the Pizza line, which does happen, but usually only when they run out of
cheese.

So now this woman is looking at me, her eyes a little wide, as she realizes
I might be laughing at what she'd said to her husband, obviously in the belief
that no one would know what it was that they were talking about. There I am,
giddy from the lack of food, and unable to control my self.

"Did you like the story?" I asked in a deep voice.

"Yes."

"Well thank you very much, that is very nice to hear." And I pretend to
read the menu again.

"Do you know the story?" Their faces both looking shocked, the
wife in embarrassment, and the man in astonishment.

"In fact," I say in a proud deep voice. "I do, very well. I wrote it."
Then Reaching my hand out to the woman. "How do you do, I'm
Sarah Lynn Morgan."

3 cans of tuna cat food $1.80.

1 double cheese, half pepperoni, $10.75.

2 people, probably still standing at the pizza counter with
two chins on the floor as I write this..., Priceless.

Sarah Lynn Morgan.

If you consider...

I have no idea. I would think the odds were better that they might
be talking about Rules are Rules, or Falling off my tricycle. I think
finding anyone who'd even been on the site would have been dumbfounding.
800,000 hits last month? Perhaps it's not as unlikely as I first
thought that they would konow the site, but to be talking about something
I wrote? Wow.

I'd just like to know if anyone else had had something like that happen.

Sarah Lynn

Let's see...

Assuming that every hit is a unique visitor (okay, huge stretch, but this is for fun)

800,000 hits

6,620,000,000 people in the world
8 out of every 66,200
1 out of every 8,275 people in the world

6,620,000,000 people in the world
300,000,000 from the US
30 out of every 662
15 out of every 331 people in the world are from the US

1/8275 * 15/331

Odds of meeting someone who has even been to the site (in January 2008) are 1 to 2,739,025 against...

Now, the actual numbers of unique visitors...

180,000 hits

6,620,000,000 people in the world
18 out of every 662,000
9 out of every 33,100 people in the world

6,620,000,000 people in the world
300,000,000 from the US
30 out of every 662
15 out of every 331 people in the world are from the US

9/33100 * 15/331

Odds of meeting someone who has even been to the site (in January 2008) are 27 to 2,191,220 against

Incredible!!!!!!!

I had to share this with my spouse. :)

the closest thing that I have that comes close was I was admiring a woman's hair cut and colour in the grocery store check out line. When she turned around I relized that she was MY client!........ good thing I liked her hair. :)

beyond cool

The world is getting smaller everyday.

sort of dream fantasy made real

kristina l s's picture

That really must have wild, I can almost picture the scene. Did you float home?

I had a dream sort of like that. Bustling away at work when someone calls my name and suddenly someone says... hey, you're... you wrote.. oh wow, can you sign... suddenly redcarpet, gown, flashbulbs... elegance personified and then my big bumbly boy puppie comes barrelling in barking like a maniac and scaring the crap out of the more timid souls, his tail spinning like a helicopter rotor as he does that doggie grin. Then snap back to reality... 'hey, come on stop daydreaming'. Bummer, but hey it was fun for a moment. He just wanted to go out to pee at 5 mutter 30 am... arrgh.

Kristina

A fan come true.

Morning everyone.
Kristina, to be honest I'm not sure if I did float home. I was sitting
at a red light giggling. I'm not sure if I really believed it. I
didn't even talk to them very much: They seemed a little nervous.
The man looked up at me twice, and said: "You're Sarah?"
Which I confirmed for him. I told him they might enjoy another story
of mine, like Emily, or several that I've got comming out.

I did get the destinct impression that the man was reading it, became
a little emotional, causing his wife to read it, also getting emotional.

In the end, I shoud have done what any self respecting author here
would have done: Cried, and asked them just why they didn't leave a
comment, or press the little vote thingy!! I was too much in shock.
Sorry, I missed that opportunity guys!.

I suppose the next two things to happen would be to turn on the news
and here one of the candidates say..."Like they were trading drugs for
sex during Sunday morning service..."; or for the ultimate in unbelivability,
A big fat cheque.

Kaleigh, Angel. It's not charmed, Because oa lot of really bad things are
happening too. (No one in my family is really ill, which is the only
thing I'm really afraid of, but bad and silly stuff that's just hard to
believe. 0o0) However,it has been most definitely been most very weird.
[ intentional tautologies for emph.]

The reason why the comment I got from Hilary p got to me so much, was I
had just recieved a note from a father of a family that I've traded
notes with two or three times. I'm not really strong enough to talk about
it, but the fact is that I was sitting here, trying to decided if I
should share it with everyone in some way. Could I even begin to make
you understand, would you believe it, would I even be able to type it?

I was not sure. I logged on out of reflex, and went to check my
numbers, and realized I'd gotten several comments for the first time
in weeks, and it was a note from a mother looking at the story to
read to her daughter; right on the board wher many of you would see
it. Space of fifteen seconds. It was breathtaking.

Of course, later that day, something god-awful happened.

I don't really know, Kaleigh, but I think circumstances so unusual
are perhaps a way that karma or grace has a way of keeping you from
imploding when things are a little harder than usual. I can tell
you, that I never would have expected it in a million years.

Sarah Lynn

Oh Dear, Sarah Lynn!!!

joannebarbarella's picture

I can't stop laughing. You should send this to Mastercard,
Chortle, chortle,
Joanne

Video of it?

After the Mastercard skit that Jo sent to me, I wonder how this would get treated?

Awesome story. I shall have to tell my missus too!

NB

Thank you

Sarah for telling us your adventure. I've just spent several minutes laughing trying to keep from falling from my chair. I must admit I've wondered about just who of those 800,000 readers and visitors are. It also reminded me of how often I've waited in line somewhere relating to my wife some tale I've read or a story I'm working on. You just never know who's listening. LOL, very kool to find a fan!
hugs and still laughing in Carolina!

Congratulations!

Sarah Lynn,
That's a wonderful story! Congratulations, and well-deserved!
Michelle

Damn...

I told you that was a wonderful story! See? Now EVERYONE'S reading it!

Should have asked where they read it.

Thank you Pippa, but perhaps I should have asked them where they read it!
My stuff is only here, a couple on the storysite, and never on FM.

If we factor in all the porn sites that might have stolen stuff, Edeyn
is going to need a bigger calculator.

Thank you, Pippa!
