Fantastic resource!
I just scanned through the link and I find it to be a fantastic overview of the do's and don't's of how to prepare a book for publishing with ePub using only open source tools.
Much of the important bits would also be effective things to bear in mind using other tools for other formats.
And really... Everyone could use some of the wisdom contained there. Styles are an important part of using any word processor effectively. Learning to use them efficiently is a HUGE time saver. And it took MS FOREVER to finally even start using them at all! Which is largely what's to blame IMO for the large number of people who thought or still think they know how to use a word processor but haven't a clue about styles.
And then when MS finally added styles... They decided to make them automagic, pissing off users who didn't understand styles whilst not at all encouraging them to actually learn them.

Thanks Erin for showing this link. I have no idea what open source is as opposed to the other one, closed source, I suppose.
There are so many issues with publishing your own book if it is non-fiction. I finally concluded that I do not have the courage. I wish that I could do some nice fiction and in the future I may.

What are the differences
of Smashword vs. something like Amazon Kindle marketplace and other ways to do e-publication? Pros? Cons?

Well...
It's an "Open source only" guide. Only open source tools to only an open source format.
Amazon Kindle is totally the opposite, it's closed source, with DRM, and certain aspects of the format itself are "secret".
You'd likely need at least one different tool as well, since LibreOffice to ePub wouldn't work.
That said... When it comes to market size... Amazon wins. Period. So yes, if you actually want to make money, you'll want to export to kindle format as well.
