I know the Buttons system is still in development, but is there a reason why I have negative buttons and it doesn't seem as if I can gain new ones...

Interesting. I have Negative buttons, too
I haven't been paying attention to the buttons, but since seeing your blog, I checked. I still have a positive balance of 8 buttons, but all shown on the first page are negative buttons.
The second page does have some positive buttons, as do the pages beyond that. The 12th page is almost all positive, while the 13th is almost all negative.

I will ditto that. I did not want to raise the question myself, since my prior quips or questions some perhaps somphomoric regarding the buttons, such as "Where oh where have my buttons gone" were not received very well.

The buttons system was turned off a while ago, it's something for the future so there's no need to worry about it now, whether you have a million or minus thirty seven.

It means you have a negative
It means you have a negative balance of real buttons, which decay with time in an exponential fashion.
You may however have a positive balance of imaginary buttons, which are of course invisible.

when someone either commented on a story, or gave it a kudo. They were sort of a way to encourage commenting.

I asked Erin about this 2 weeks ago.
She told me that the buttons feature was turned off to see if it was part of the reason the site was acting slow. I'm not sure why the accrued buttons are vanishing, but I don't think it's anything to worry about. After all, we never had them before so if we lose them, what have we lost?

Seriously though, all my button history has been negative for some reason. I suspect it is due to the fact buttons are not being awarded for participating on this site and buttons are just allowed to expire.
