It does sound familiar, but I passed it due to the "pets" element which does not appeal to me. You could always try the old time consuming way. FM has a category for non human, and sci-fi. You could do a search in both sections. The non human is newer and only has 98 stories. The sci fi is a bunch larger, but that story should not be all that far back.
