Florida Lifeguard fired for saving a life
POLITICS
May Your Light Forever Shine
No
It has nothing to do with politics but instead sheer stupidity. An employer can fire an employee for any reason in Florida but Jeff Ellis and Associates apparently never thought through this firing the possibility that this firing could become a juicy news story. Which it did.(Yesterday was the 4th of July, a slow news day) A public uproar has started which will put them in a very unflattering light and could prove to be very costly since their contract with Hallandale Beach is due to expire within the year. So Jeff Ellis and Associates is beginning to back track but some damage to their reputation can never be undone. Did these bozos ever hear of the 'Good Samaritan Law' here in Florida? Apparently not.
BTW Hallandale Beach is about 60 miles from my home. It's in Broward County, where I lived from 1976-1979.

Yes
I think politics may well be part of the equation. while i don't believe the company actually hoped someone would die in the "unprotected areas", they prolly hoped to negotiate additional coverage for more money. -BUT- if the lifeguards cover those areas for free, why add them to the new contract?
firing the guy on the spot, instead of laying him off later, is indeed stupidity though.
Bean counters
Jeff Ellis and associates MUST be owned or controled by accountants AND miserly accountants at that. Only accountants could value the minutae of a contract over the life of a human being.

And after the sinking of the Titanic the White Star line sent the family of William Hartley a bill for the destruction of his uniforms. The same man who stood on the sinking ship until the very last second keeping people calm while his band played music. He was the violinist who played Nearer My God to Thee in the movie.

Florida government
I have worked for the state of florida and their rules would be the same. He would have been fired, my managers have stated that there is no interpetation or leeway. They treat their contract companies the same way and it says nothing about protecting the lives of citizens in their rule books. There is very strict guidelines on how much you can help people while on the job. The real problem is the lifeguard caused a serious liability issue for them because he was working for them in a uniform in an umauthorized area which means they can be sued for more money because they were not supposed to be working in that area.

It is a long road ahead but I will finally become who I should be.
Actually, no
Good Samaritan laws protect people from being sued for saving or attempting to save someone's life. This though is what happens when privatization is carried to stupid extremes. Life guards at a public beach should be public employees so that the responsibility and authority are where they belong, together.

Erin

Privatization
There is a movement in Florida to privatize all of government. We hire companies to manage other contractors that work for the government. Majority of the child abuse investigations are done by private companies. Adoption and foster care is now managed mainly by private companies or organizations. State hospitals are manned by contracted nursing staff with doctors responding by e-mail or video conference. The state actually owns private schools to teach children and one of those is Edison school systems that take over schools that are not performing. Our governor wants to shutdown public hospitals that use government funds and replace them with private companies. Last year our governor tried to replace nine state parks with golf courses ran by Arnold Palmer.

Going Out of Business!
Once government is completely out of the business of government, it can sell off all of those useless citizens. :)

More bean counters
Government about the bottom line, because of the bottom line and BY people who only SEE the bottom line.

I would cancel Jeff Ellis contract then reward the hero with a sum calculated by; the total cost of Ellis contract, divided by the number of verified drowning victims saved by the company. (before this episode)

Actually...
The "bean counters" usually wind up paying more for "privatized" outsourcing.
Medicare "competition," for example, has the government paying more for the same services if provided by either Medicare or Medicaid, and the total US expenditure on health care would be sufficient to provide public health insurance for everyone at the same cost we spend insuring only a portion of the population, the effect of which is that roughly one hundred thousand Americans die every year who would not have died if they were French, Australian, or Japanese. We have infant mortality rates comparable to Croatia, Belarus, Lithuania, Serbia, Poland, and Slovakia, well below most of the "modern" world.
We have one of the most inefficient health-care "systems" in the world, because we've sliced it into tiny little "private" bits, which really makes about as much sense as privatizing the Army, the Navy, and (for that matter) the government itself. After all, if one had the money, wouldn't it be nice if one were able to buy your own private Congressmen and Senators? Oh! Wait! That already happens, doesn't it?

useless citizens
Oddly enough management and the politicians consider unemployed or disabled citizens as useless and rather not have to pay anything to assist them even though it is the law.

sounds like something the British Military, usually they send the bill for missing ammo to the dead soldiers family.

Life Guard not left Unprotected
Stupidity raises its head, and justifying this action of firing the lifeguard adds to the problem.
Lifeguards do not usually work or react in isolation. At least two other Lifeguards realized they momentarily had a larger area to watch. No one else was put at risk, no problems arose as a real life threatening emergency was handled.
The person who did the firing was probably previously controlling election fraud.
