That is a word with a particularly odd slant among some hopefully small sections of US society, as evidenced bu its definition on that utterly barking website 'conservapedia'. I am not linking that here, as it is not a nice place. Suffice it to say that the first part of their definition is a long rant about religion, followed by another about being anti-commerce. The rest then follows, referring to 'corrupt programmes', 'censorship of teacher-led prayer' and then a whole raft of evils such as gun control, affirmative action, better health care for the poor, and among said list the following dreadful ideas:

"Taxpayer-funded and government-controlled public education
The denial of traditional gender roles
Insisting that men and women be placed in the same jobs in the military
Legalized same-sex marriage"

The site is utterly insane, but it does reflect the image the L-word has in the US.
