There was a case http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_and_Lorena_Bobbitt . And I suppose there have been other less well publicised incidents. It just goes to show that women are not defenseless.
She was inspired
She was most likely inspired by Lorena Bobbit who cut off her husband's penis but did not dispose of it, it was later reattached successfully. Speculation afterwards was how she should have disposed of it, the garbage disposal, drive by the dog pound, meat tenderizer etc.

BUT, it does make you wonder just what he did to push her over that particular edge... She certainly wasn't trying to get away with it.

Evidently she took steps to ensure the surgeons couldn't reattach it, as they did with John Bobbit.
It certainly sounds as though the police are throwing the proverbial book at her, with each aspect of the sequence of events covered by a different crime:
Looking up the definition of aggravated mayhem, it's interesting to discover that "mayhem" originally meant to cripple or injure someone (e.g. by removal of a limb) - the more common definition of "disorderly conduct" arose from a misunderstanding of the journalese expession "rioting and mayhem".
So in order, administering a drug... (to his food), poisoning (the result), false imprisonment (tying him to the bed), assault (which can be defined as "to intentionally cause another person to apprehend a harmful or offensive contact" - so as he was conscious at the time...), aggravated mayhem (the battery / penectomy itself) - and for good measure, since the assailant was his wife, spousal abuse.
