I really don't understand how some men think that raping a lesbian is going to 'cure' them. Surely, any effect it has is going to put them off being near men for life?

Africa does have a long history of terrible violence towards women and girls generally. NO person deserves this treatment. This the present direction the USA is taking, and is an example that the use of the reptile hind brain is rampaging in my country not just in the developing world. What a shame that we still are discussing things that should have passed into distant memory. WHY? No one wiped any replies by you from this thread. Sorry to burst your bubble but you are NOT being persecuted. :) How the heck could anyone erase a reply BEFORE it was finished and posted? Until you hit submit and post the thing, you have control of the only version of it.
What probably happened is that you got bit by the 5-minutes-after-the-half-hour reset of the servers that happens at H:05 and H:35 because of a memory leak in Drupal. If you hit Submit in the 20 seconds of the reset, it will get lost in transit a bit more than half of the time. Hit back to previous page on your browser and your post will magically reappear where you can send it again. Wait a minute to be sure.
There is no "overzealous arbiter of what's acceptable and what's not" here, there's just me and two or three helpers who bring my attention to things that need decisions.

Ignorant people do ignorant things, and some ignorant people like being ignorant. Doing harm to another is ignorance born of anger, fear, and pure unadulterated stupidity. There are people in many countries, our own included, that cherish ignorance and violent acts for the act itself. If that is being evil, then they are evil.
And men LIKE rape. It makes them feel empowered, like---like, well like MEN! Many men wear their egos in their penis, and seem to believe that their penis is the most enlightening thing they have, and therefore "corrective rape" is bound to make any woman immediately fall to their knees and worship their organ and the expression of superiority it brings (at least to the male mind). And they can't conceive of any woman not liking what they do to them, ergo they commit these crimes. I suspect they think of it as punishment as well, for the woman having the temerity to think she can do without their male godhood.
It is a crime of hate and ignorance, and nothing less. Castration with penectomy might be appropriate punishment for the crime?

It makes perfect sense from their erroneous starting point of sexual orientation being determined by gender; the stereotype of women being 'meant' only for men! It's like building a house on sand instead of rock. The premise is faulty, so the faulty conclusion follows. Since they believe that women should only be with men, it fits their world view that a sexual encounter with an 'obviously superior' human such as a man would make a woman want to change. Like 'drea pointed out, this culture (subculture of South Africa, actually) believes in some circles that men can 'lose' the AIDS virus by having sex with an infant. I don't think the rapists seriously think they will turn lesbians straight; but that they are hoping mainly to MAKE THEM GO AWAY. Back into hiding, afraid to say anything about being gay, or to act or dress in a less than stereotypically feminine way. It's terror as a political weapon, as I said somewhere before; and I don't know that it speaks of something innate in men (I sure hope not) as much as it does a certain ideological mentality. South Africa has made some progress toward LGBT rights, and these defenders of "how things were back in the good old days" are making their disapproval known in the ugly cowardly way these types always do. Hopefully their day is on its way to being over (although maybe not immediatly), and they'll become more and more marginal as their cause loses support, as society becomes more accepting of differences and stands up against their violence, and the law comes down on them whenver they try anything like that ...... until they're left with sitting at their computers posting whimpering impotent illitrate pea-brained anonymous insults (HA HA U STOOPID DYKES R GAY!) in the comment space beneath articles at YAHOO NEWS.
