Two spirits? I don't know it sounds like a dangerous cocktail, perhaps it was for young Fred. However, I entirely agree with the principle of being allowed to explore what being yourself is, provided it does no one else any harm, which of course it shouldn't. I suspect, given the manner of the death of this youngster, it was without any doubt a hate crime - and that saddens me.

Violence is never justified - it just means you lost the argument.
