I'm looking for some help from the BCTS community.

I've been asked to go on a roster reading for people who are blind.

As I understand things, readers have to come up with a short story to read when it's their turn.

The reading is recorded, and available for a week for clients to phone in and listen.

So, if you know of one or more short stories that would be appropriate for a diverse community, I'd be grateful to receive your suggestions. If a particular story is available online, then so much the better if you're able to provide a link. I'm more than happy to go to our local public library if you're recommending something from the published world that's likely to be in a general collection.

So, if you have a favorite story you'd like to suggest, I for one will be very grateful. I'm sure too, that indirectly the listeners will also appreciate your assistance.

"The Shunned House" by H.P. Lovecraft

Probably one of my favorites of his. Either that, or "The Color Out Of Space," though both are potentially longer than what you actually need.

If they accept readings from classic works, then Rudyard Kipling's "Rikki Tikki Tavi," from The Jungle Book, is also an excellent choice. Or just about any short story by Isaac Asimov.

The Most Dangerous Game. Forget the author's name just now, dang it, but it's good. Scott Ramsey did a really good TG take on it with Female of the Species, by the way.

A quick search on Google turned up "The Most Dangerous Game" at http://www.classicshorts.com/stories/danger.html

It seems the author is Richard Connell (1893–1949).

You've inadvertently (I suspect) helped me further, because it looks as if the Classic Short Stories website will in itself prove a useful resource in my quest:

Fewer and fewer people these days read short stories. This is unfortunate--so few will ever experience the joy that reading such fine work can give. The goal of this site is to give a nice cross section of short stories in the hope that these short stories will excite these people into rediscovering this excellent source of entertainment.

This is precisely why I posted this blog entry. I'm not familiar at all with the writings of H.P. Lovecraft, so I'll make a point of looking for these stories.

I also like your suggestion about Isaac Asimov.

I think these stories are great for a wide group of people and there was usually a moral.

The Complete Sherlock Holmes Short Stories, and Ruth Rendell has done some short stories as well including, The New Girlfriend which has an element of crossdressing in it. If you want to keep them awake at night, how about some M.R. James, Ghost Stories or Roald Dahl's, Tales of the Unexpected.

Thanks, A. I found the Complete Sherlock Holmes online with each story downloadable in pdf format.

I have a sneaking suspicion that I have the Roald Dahl book here, somewhere, so I'll have to seek it out, but I don't mind admitting that I'd forgotten about it.

I'll also look for the other authors you mention next time I'm at the public library.

If you want to have fun making sound effects and pronouncing fun words, try James Thurber's "Secret Life of Walter Mitty." You also get to show off your range, since it's several vignettes in one story, and you can give each one its own style.
