You've probably all seen people busy texting on their mobile phones while walking around the streets, probably not paying too much attention to where they're going. Well, a few days ago, in Pennsylvania, one woman got her comeuppance in a shopping centre - and it was caught on CCTV...

There are some interesting factors in this case. First of all, the woman worked at the mall (shopping centre). All security could do was laugh at her. Absolutely no one came to the woman's aid. There may be several members of mall security who do not have a job because of what they did and didn't do. The woman was interviewed this morning on ABC.
I absolutely agree that the texting obsession is contributing to many accidents both in motor vehicles and outside. I don't text, and refuse to learn. The fact it costs more than voice is ridiculous. It's all a plot by the cell phone industry. I've been passed by idiots doing 85 mph, texting, and attempting to steer the vehicle with their knees. Texting, twitter, and the like are phenomena that serve very litle purpose in life.

In the UK ...
... it's illegal to use a hand-held mobile phone whilst driving and rightly so in my view. Cycling past a junction and seeing a driver talking on a mobile as he waits is quite unnerving and only contributes to the 'Sorry, mate, I didn't see you' syndrome. Personally, I think all mobile use by drivers, even hands-free, should be prohibited but that's because I'm often a vulnerable road user - cyclist and pedestrian.
I don't use text and my mobile is usually switched off and used only for 'emergencies' but I thought texting was much, much cheaper than voice. I'm pretty sure it is in the UK.
Incidentally I loathe the 'app' word :) They're applications, folks and I used to write them for embedded micro-processor systems.

She is now suing the mall because the guards didn't rush to help her. I wonder if she would sue the state if she walked into the freeway while texting?

I can't believe she's suing anyone. That's just being vindictive. She's already wet, so what did she expect the mall guards to do, help her off with her clothes and blow dry her? :)
Something similar happened in a PX while I was stationed in El Paso. My ex was a model and very attractive. One of those very hormone-driven young soldiers (most of us were) was gawking at her instead of watching where he was going. He missed the door at the PX and walked right through a plate glass window directly adjacent, falling a few feet to the ground. Fortunately, he wasn't too severely injured. She told me that she felt bad about it, but she also had the weirdest grin....

It uses the camera to display the ground in front of you while you text overtop.
