I did this a while back
It was really simple and all of the 'stuff' associated with the old name was still there. It's a quick and easy process.

The only place it would matter would be places where someone actually typed your user name. Changing the user name will change the actual pointer to all your accounts, posts etc. If you have an author listing, it won't change those but you can ask me to do so. :)
