I must be mad...

You may vaguely recall a story I wrote a while ago called "The Genie". Somehow I got this crazy idea in my head of recording myself reading it...

...so at 5:30pm today, trying to ignore the fact the temperature was dropping from 8 °C to 3 °C (hence the thick coat!), I sat at the edge of a local monument and did the deed.

This has not been edited (apart from cutting away the trek to/from the camera, and putting in a fade at the start/end) - mainly because whenever I hear a recording of myself, I cringe, thinking I sound awful and lame.

So if you're brave enough, down a glass or two of wine (to dull your senses) and click on this link:

So am I really as bad as I think I am, or do I have an overly deprecatory view of how I sound?

But hey, I like experimenting with doing new things with technology, and this was certainly a new thing for me. Whether I'm mad enough to do anything remotely similar will depend (to a certain extent) on what the audience thinks. Whether you close the window after 5 seconds because you've had enough of me, keep it running but don't hear much because you're laughing so much, or whether you think it's actually a credible performance, let me know.

Oh, by the way, if you're wondering about the extra camera in my hand, it was recording a copy of the audio - I didn't know in advance how well the audio on the video recording itself would turn out, so I played safe by having a recording device closer to me. In the end, I didn't need that recording, but if reception to this version is fairly positive, I'll use it to produce a cleaner version with less background noise, a short video tour around the windmill itself, and possibly sound effects at appropriate places (assuming [a] I can stand the sound of my own voice, and [b] there's enough room to insert it without getting in the way of the reading).

I just saw it.

While the picture is great the sound is really iffy, I missed a lot of what was being said. It looked great though.

I agree

I haven't watched it all the way through, but I have seen enough to see the big problem with this video.

The microphone you are using is picking up so much background noise that you are being totally drowned out. Because of the distance between you and the microphone your voice is coming out too quiet in comparison.

If your second sound recording has a better foreground to background sound ratio then you may be able to filter out some of the background noise, however this particular soundtrack isn't very listenable to.

I think your reading is fine, its just being held back by technical problems.

Good picture, iffy sound

As someone as already pointed out the picture is good but the sound isn't the best. I really don't hear anything bad about your voice when I can hear it on your video. If you can get the technical bugs worked out I think you'll do fine. Good luck with your efforts!

Righteo...

Give me a few days, and I'll get a cleaner version uploaded. Into LiVES, detach the audio, clean that up in Audacity, reimport, and reupload.
Hmm, with that spare audio recording I did, I may be able to do a pseudo-stereo (not possessing a digital video camera, this was done with a bog standard compact digital stills camera, which of course can only record in mono).

It'll take a while as the original's nearly 500MB big, and even the 420MB version I uploaded to YouTube took 45 minutes to get there (@ 144KB/s)...

[EDIT] the audio file from the other camera's now been trimmed and mp3'd - go to http://bnorwood.fastmail.fm/ then click on genie-close.mp3
This camera was right next to me, so the SNR is a lot higher.

It's a good video, but the sound is not very good. Sorry, but I simply couldn't hear you over the background noise. If I may make a suggestion... when I'm doing video with commentary I use a lapel mike pinned on my collar so it picks up 'me' rather than background noise.

I used a digital stills camera, so it didn't have a mic slot. However, I had a spare camera (which can record video and audio, but the image taking facility's kinda bust) by my side, which recorded much clearer audio. The video currently on YouTube was just the rough version, so now comes the tricky part of synchronising the separate but relatively decent audio track (which I've just uploaded elsewhere separately in case you want to hear that alone) with the video...

Ditto the above comments

The sound is iffy and I look forward to watching it again after you get the better audio synced in.

I just watched the video on Youtube. I agree that the sound is not as good as the quality of the video, but it's adaquate for me.

More than that, a very brave job of reading your story. I suppose we all know why most media tend to choose the same spokesperson for every kind of part. James Earl Jones, etc., but you do well enough too.

Now I'm going to read the story!
