It's been ages since I played any game on my PC apart from the standard Solitaire and Minesweeper, as I find the violence that seems to accompany most as pretty mindless.
I recently came across Iron Roses, an adventure story which I really enjoyed, played in the 3rd person, featuring guitar playing Alex trying to reform her group. Set in a US city in the middle of a garbage strike, there was lots of realism far removed from the fantasy worlds of many games. She even had a gay friend! To experienced gamers, the tasks were probably pretty trivial, but they were just right for me.
Games represent the easiest way of all to change sex. Can anyone recommend any good ones?

Believe it or not...
Believe it or not, Facebook has quite a few games that might fit into your category... Some of them are far more interesting, if you have a number of friends that also use Facebook and are willing to play as well (not necessarily at the same time!), like "Farmville" and the like.

Recommending games is easy
It's the "violence" part that's hard to avoid.
I'm rather partial to the newer "Tomb Raider" titles myself. Yes, there is an element of gunplay to them, but most of the gameplay is based around finding your way through platforms and ledges in areas that are usually quite beautiful. The three newest games (excluding the latest download-only offering) had an excellent story that spanned all three titles to boot, and since you can get them for less than ten bucks each they're pretty cheap too.
Or, if you're looking for something really amazing, and can deal with a few bugs/weird sound effects, there's always Minecraft. Not so much story, but you can design your own character skin, the graphics are simple enough to run on even many older computers, and if you set it to "peaceful" there's nary a fight to be seen, all you'll do is build and build. Lots of fun for those of us who grew up with a massive collection of Legos.
Of course, there's always "The Sims" if you're really looking to establish a new life for yourself. I found the series far more tedious than fun, but the numbers don't lie; many people find the games a blast.
If you want to find tons of games that are easy to access though (and usually decently cheap, or at least fair) then try downloading Steam and checking out their online catalog. There are hundreds of games on there, and with Steam's support of cloud saves for a lot of them, you can take your saves to any computer you play the game on.
Alright, I'll stop acting like a video game salesperson :P

Not the best person for this
as I like the violent ones. ;) But my parents play a lot of 'find the hidden object' type puzzle games and seem to like them. There's tons of them out there, they are quite popular right now I think. Pretty cheap, too.
I haven't played an adventure game since...King's Quest V? Wow, that was a long time ago! My drug...I mean game, of choice right now is Arcanum, a sort steam-punk meets magic RPG, but it's got plenty of violence so I doubt you'd be interested in that.

Also, if you do decide on a more or less violent way of moving, here's a few sage words of advice. :)
1)If you go combat mage route, your first magic choices are - Harm, Stone Throw, Fireball - in the order of getting. These three are the only ones I was taking - as they cover the entire multitude of situations - a cheap attack, a more costly chest-banger, and an area attack.
2)If you go combat tech route, your weapon of choice is real-time sniper rifle, 5th in the line.
On a side note, why not try some of the builder/MMORTS games? Many of them allow for a peaceful life - if you're in a strong alliance. :)

The only game I have ever tried to play is some of the Pokemon junk.....had to try to pass the time while sitting guard duty on construction sites over night. I do own a Game CVube that I keep for all the grandkids. I like to see them play Sly Cooper, the oldest boy likes the Star Wars games.

OK, you don't play a gendered character, and it's a solo game rather than multiplayer, but the SimCity series is worth a look. SimCity 4 was probably the best of the bunch, as EA threw the rule book out of the window when developing Societies. And the game's very customisable - there are numerous sites which offer additional content and mods. I haven't played it for a while (it used to run under Mandriva Linux, but about a year ago an upgrade to Wine stopped it working), but I had a 3 GB plugins folder at the height of my playing... :)
Or you could always hunt around for a version of a certain game produced by DMA Design that's all about trying to stop creatures unintentionally killing themselves. Needless to say, this game is also famous (or should that be infamous?) for its music. If I told you the creatures in question had white skin, green hair and wore ankle-length jumpers/jerseys, and that their favourite catchphrases were "Let's Go!" and "Oh No!", I think you'll know what I'm talking about :)

Difficult choices
Civilisation V. It's been seriously impacting on my writing for the last couple of weeks. While you don't play a character specifically, leading my people onwards I do get to be Queen Elizabeth! :-)

What I particularly liked about Iron Roses is that the lead character is no Lara Croft, simply a believably real person with the kind of real problems we all have, trying to re-form the rock group she played in some years ago.
She's fallen out with her Dad, she can't pay the rent, her room mate is mad at her, and people let her down, but it's her powers of persuasion (rather than her kick-boxing technique) which has to win the day ie, being nice to people. Above all else, she makes friends as she progresses through the story, and how many games can you say that about?
Trying to control a kingdom or a city seems pretty remote from real life, and I'm fortunate that violence has no part in my world (touch wood).
I've started Siberia - I'll see how it goes, but I will look carefully at all the suggestions people have made - many thanks for them.
