Adverts... specifically the removal of...

Okay I understand the reasoning behind having adverts on the site, I even click the ones that interest me on occasion however a current advert (through project wonderful) is actually making me want to visit the site less often or find some way of blocking all the adverts.

The advert in question leads to the 'Worlds Biggest Zit' website and to be honest the image of the huge thing on the guy's neck makes me ill every time I see it. I have tried blocking just that advert and blocking just that image with no luck.

Is there a chance of removing that specific advert, site, image or something?

as with Mr Ram I use

as with Mr Ram I use firefox/adblock. It is highly customisable: You can block individual sites or even individual elements on that site; i.e a picture or pictures.

Mr. Ram"

Firefox and I are not on speaking terms!

It does not like both me and my wonkie VISTA machine. It is rude to me and throws me out. Though my Blonde genes are at fault, not me, I suspect. :)

firefox and vista

I will not use anything else on my vista machine IE just will not work on Vista unless nothing else is running.

One tip to speed up vista is to switch off indexing. surprising how much processing that takes up all the time...

Might I suggest...

...that the site is not a perpetual motion machine, and needs periodic support to keep going. If one doesn't like ads, which generate some revenue, perhaps other forms of support might be in order.

blocking ad's

I dont block all ad's just the really annoying ones; and I do click through from here regularly;
but on some sites its just too much and detracts from the job in hand. I kill the whole lot; just from that portal. Adblock really IS that customizable.

Not a good day for this complaint :)

I'm out of town. Will look into it tomorrow. But for logged in users, many of the ad spots cN be turned off in My Accounts.

Could have sworn I'd already

Could have sworn I'd already replied to this thread.

1)It's back :'( http://www.worldslargestzit.net/ || http://www.projectwonderful.com/out_nojs.php?r=2&c=0&id=1691...

2)For the reason of occasionally clicking adds for support I only use Add blocking software were adds are intrusive which with the exception of the above here they generally aren't.

3)Cannot find any way to disable adds through my account*... though sometimes seemingly at random all adverts will vanish when I'm logged in (normally for the first few page refreshes after logging in). *Actually I just looked again and I can see how, but if I disable the adds this way I might as well use AdBlockPlus... :/

Depending on the work involved for admins I'd guess it is better to have adverts removed than to to just remove all adverts.

So with hope... thanks.

No such ad on PW's network

erin's picture

Not for the first link. The second link is to TGFiction and I don't see a reason to block them either.

Not sure what you're seeing and if I can't find the ad, I can't block it.

Sorry, I need more info.

Don't know what else to do,

Don't know what else to do, when I posted the above the 2nd link led to the first... :/

Now I get a free search engine from the 2nd link.

If I look again (and see what I don't want) is there any specific information I need to copy/paste?

Are you sure you don't have any malware at your end?

erin's picture

A friend of mine picked up some sort of pushware on his computer that just randomly turns links into links to freakish search sites, casino sites and porn. Sometimes when I use his computer to check BC, even story links can suddenly take me to the land of Danish women with hairy noses.

But a search of PW's ad database does not find that first site, and when I click that second one, I just go to TGFiction.net.

Other than that, I have no specific suggestions.

Well! PW found who had placed the ad!

erin's picture

I sent a copy of that link you gave me to PW and they tracked it down so I was able to ban them. They said the reason I couldn't track it from my end was the ad had expired and so was not in the part of the database I had access to. They're going to try to figure out how they can solve that so publishers can ban objectionable advertisers even if the ad has already expired.

So it probably ISN'T malware on your machine!
