My sympathies and condolences on the IBS. I suffered with it for years before finding out that high-gluten wheat flour was triggering mine. After giving up pasta, bagels, pizza, and bread, I've been relatively symptom-free for a few years. (And no, I don't have sprue -- I was tested for that.) But, damn... I sure miss those.
IBS is a miserable diagnosis. It's more of a diagnosis-by-exclusion. After they've eliminated specific causes, the poor patient gets left with that useless catchall to hang on to. And a bunch of semi-useful nostrums to ease the symptoms. Everyone's cause is likely different, too.
