Well, it's good for dogs at least!
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/3266819.stm
The Wisconsin team tested the health-giving properties of stout against lager by giving it to dogs who had narrowed arteries similar to those in heart disease.
They found that those given the Guinness had reduced clotting activity in their blood, but not those given lager.
So next time you go to the pub, order a pint of the black stuff for your pooch! :)
(Never mind the strange things some scientists choose to research - and the creatures they use in their research...)
Meanwhile, also in health news, a study's been published on the subject of loneliness.
http://news.bbc.co.uk/1/hi/health/8701763.stm
In a poll of 2,256 people, nearly 60% of those aged between 18 to 34 questioned spoke of feeling lonely often or sometimes, compared to 35% of those aged over 55. Technology can be a double-edged sword - on the one hand, it enables people to make connections they might not otherwise have made, and virtual friendships can evolve into real-life friendships. On the other hand, it can also serve as a replacement for face to face interaction.

Dogs and beer
If someone gave my dog .710 ml of beer, they would probably kill her. She only weighs 7 kilos (~15 lbs). :) I'm sure that amount was titrated for size but how about for sex? Alcoholic drinks are nearly twice as potent for women as for men. And will porter do? I don't like stout.
Hugs,
Erin

An eminently suitable conclusion.

Guinness IS good for you...
It may interest you to know that they've been saying that for years.
When working on a house in Lewes, East Sussex, back in the early eighties (1980 actually. I was at work the day John Lennon died), we found part of an old Brighton and Hove Herald newspaper from 1939 within one of the sash windows. It showed pictures of Brighton as was back in the day: negligible traffic and pictures of the town hall, surrounded by sandbags!
The front page headline was about three boys who got caught scrumping - that's pinching the fruit off people's fruit trees to most of you - and the youngest at eleven, was said to have been "led astray" by the older boys.
In the adverts section, they were selling Anderton (air raid) Shelters, which were big enough to put a dart board in and were even supplied with two sets of darts and a board, so you didn't get bored whilst air raids were going on.
Anyhow, that's all pretty much by-the-by as the main thing that sparked this memory was an advert for Guinness which stated that "Doctors say: Guinness is good for you".
Things have obviously changed a bit since then...
I don't just look it, I'm totally into a bit of the Nigerian Lager
*IS* Guinness good for you?
It was certainly the tipple of choice at the Irish piper’s club I used to attend, so I suppose they thought it was good for them. When I remarked to our host that I couldn’t get into it, he replied that he couldn’t get out of it!
