It is like I said, I have been actually on this site since 2002, and in that time I have not seen a comment notification like I have on other writing sites. Of course we aren't just another pretty face, LOL, but still, when somebody new leaves a comment on something we have written, we should at least be made aware of that.
So I am asking the powers that be here to look into that and see how it can be done here. On another site whenever a message or a review is left, it says either "You have new reviews", or "You have new messages", or both. Maybe it would be different here, like maybe an automatic notification in our inbox, or something like that. Thank you.

If you open your My Stories folder when you log on it shows any new comments as 'NEW' in blue in the story line under the comment total number. I think there's an email notification facility for new inbox messages/PM's too but I've never used it, or turned it or whaatever, but the other is automatic.

a splendid idea actually, it'd give maybe more incentive for people to post comments if they felt they were getting heard. I do wonder though what the ratio between comments to PM's is. I know there are times I feel it's better to PM the author then put something up in public especially if it's personal.
I still miss the vote button.

That will show you any pages that you've posted, or that you commented on, that have any new comments. The number of new comments is shown in underlined blue, and is a link to that page that will take you directly to the first new comment.

Yes
You only "Track" those stories you've posted or commented on. This also allows you to easily see when stories are updated for any reason, but only if you've commented on them. This is one of the many benefits of commenting.
If you know someone on the site whose work you particularly admire, you can "Track" their stories and posts in the same way after clicking on their name to see their account.

If you go to My account and click on the Track tab, you will see a list of your recent contributions (both fiction and comments,) along with the total number of replies, the number of new replies, and the time since the last update.
comments and traffic
Facebook currently does this for just about everything. If we did it on this site then it would potentially drag down the performance server. Facebook sends messages to the original owner what was being commented on along with sending messages to anyone else that is already replied to the original posting. So imagine ten different people post a comment to something which is eleven e-mails increasing exponentially for every additional comment later on. I have a feeling these servers are not nearly as big as Facebook's servers. SMTP servers are take up a lot of resources and risk large amounts of spam hitting it which will further drag down performance.
This just my two cents. (I am certified in running tcp/ip servers and networks)

In Facebook, it depends on your settings but not everybody pays attention to the settings. If you leave Facebook settings wide open then Facebook will abuse you and take advantage of you to no end. Take it from experience because one of my relatives was getting 500 messages a day from Facebook until I cleaned their setiings. Within three days she had 1500 messages from Facebook and I cut it down to fifteen a day.
