The Mail
has run enough of these types of articles that you would think they'd be able to get their pronouns right by now.
If I didn't know better I would think they had some agenda & were being deliberately insulting to Ms. De Salvo.
Oh well, next year she'll be singing the lead in Carmen at Bayreuth and they're still be wankers.

Possibly the singer ASKED to be identified as male
The article talks about the singer, saying that comic opera was a perfect fit, that the singer's voice was ideal for opera bufa and also talks about training the baritone voice to maintain this fit. So male pronouns might be exactly what this singer WANTS advertised.
I only wish I looked half as pretty as the person in the picture perported to be this singer.

Surprisingly...
...most of the 11 published comments are supportive. Perhaps the Wail's traditional readership is elsewhere today...
Meanwhile, a search of Google reveals The Indy has a brief article on her, as does Gazeteport (a Turkish paper) and a few other internationals. All probably got the article from the same source, as the translated content of many seems very similar to the UK articles, and even reuse the same photo.
