It seems as there are some people for whom garments that cover the entire face can be useful/necessary, wherever in the world they may be...

A Dubai man whose fiancée kept her charms hidden under a niqab opted for a quick divorce after his first glimpse beneath the veil revealed she was cross-eyed and sported a beard.

According to Gulf News, the unnamed "ambassador" never saw his intended's face on the few times they met, but was convinced all was well since the bride's mother had shown his mum pictures of his wife-to-be.

In fact, the snaps were of the bride's sister, and when the marriage contract was signed and the groom asked his new wife for a kiss, the terrible truth was revealed. The man immediately cancelled the wedding bash and filed a suit alleging "he was tricked by his parents-in-law and incurred emotional and moral damage".

The subsequent Sharia court hearing annulled the marriage, but rejected the plaintiff's claim for 500,000 dirhams ( £85k) which he said he'd spent on clothes, jewellery and gifts.

The court also referred the woman to a specialist when her temporary other half demanded she be examined for "hormonal deficiencies". The expert reported she didn't in fact have any such problem.

I can understand the mother's motivation for the deception and the chap's disappointment in his new bride's appearance, but it's nice to see the court threw out his rather ambitious compensation claim!

Not Only is Love Blind

But I have come to believe it is deaf and dumb as well.

Their Society

I thought what the mother did was ingenious in a way. It is time that the male dominated societies over there are exposed for the ridiculous ideas they have about the place of women in their societies. I guess it is fortunate that he did not kill his bride in a rage. I imagine a lot of other men probably would. At least there was a judge who was smart enough not to give into his demands for such a ridiculous amount. If they would get rid of the oppressive and heavy handed dress codes for women, they wouldn't have this problem. He deserved everything he got with this situation.
