Have you ever heard that? No stupid questions just unasked ones? Well here is one for you all and maybe someone can help me! As I posted before I'm entering Amazon's Breakthrough contest. As part of their requirements, I need to have a from 3 to 5,000 word excerpt. Okay I have that! Now I don't claim to be very computer savvy but this one stumped me. The excerpt needs to be double-spaced but no 'hard' ones using return. I found the margins and changed those. I changed the font and font size, check. So how do I change the sentence spacing?
I'm using a cheap version of MS works, but I do have Open Office. Tried that too, but couldn't make heads or tails of it either. So will someone take mercy on this poor writer? :)

Eurkea ! I have had a breakthrough!. Just Highlight your text in Microsoft works and hit CTRL + 1 for single spacing and CTRL + 2 for Double Spacing. In Open office do Go to Format>Paragraph and open the "Indents & Spacing" tab. Under "Line spacing" select "Double" from the dropdown, then hit OK. The Ctrl like for works should work also for open office if not try alt instead of CTRL.

Right-click anywhere on the page.
There's a Line Spacing option in the menu.
In fact, most formatting options are available from the right-click context menu.
Incidentally, the highlight then Ctrl + num applies heading styles in OOo, with Ctrl + 0 applying Text Body.
Alt + num doesn't appear to do anything. Neither does Ctrl + Alt + num.

A Little Bit of History
When the US Army had mules back in the 1800s, they would shave the tail off of new mules that were being taken out into the field for the first time. The reason for this was that if something should happen that would spook the pack animals, the soldiers would know to grab those with the shaved tails first because they were the ones most likely to do something unexpected and cause the other mules to get excited.
Sergeants and company commanders applied the same logic to second lieutenants.

Majors not Lt's
Personally I think Majors are worse. They really think they will all become Generals and they and only they can do anything. The Lt's I broke in at least knew they were ... learning and applying leadership principles they just learned.
In my squadron...
we said the LCDRs (Major in the other services) had had their frontal lobotomies. That was one of the requirements for them to become senior officers.
The average Ensign (Is there such a thing) is clueless. The ones that went to boat school (AKA Anapolis) tended to THINK they knew more, but we were all in great need of learning how the REAL navy worked. By the time we made it to JG, if we'd actually been in the fleet for a while, we were probably no longer too dangerous. And, most of the real work (at officer grades) got done with the folks with railroad tracks for insignia. By then, they knew how to set the parameters the Chief or Leading Petty officer needed, and get out of the way, except when they needed someone to be official.

Thanks everyone! Ctrl + value worked just fine on MS works. You were right about not using the number pad. Don't know why but hey! All I have to do now is to wait till midnight to send everything in. There are a limited number of entries being accepted so I'm not taking any chances. I must admit my odds of winning are slim, given how Sci-fi fantasy Transgender is looked upon by the world but nothing ventured, nothing gained. :)

Check on Definition of Excerpt

I'm just guessing, but you might want to check on the definition of "excerpt" for this contest.
I've submitted quite a number of stories to literary agents over the years. They will ask you to send them a certain number of "sample" chapters. To the average person the word "sample" would seem to mean any chapters that would be representative of the whole. In the literary world if they ask for three sample chapters they mean the first three chapters. If they ask for five sample chapters, they mean the first five chapters. They have sort of a "Captain May I" set of rules that separates those in the know from people that would merely be wasting their time.
For purposes of this contest, in literary world-speak, an "excerpt" might mean the first 3-5,000 words and not just any 3-5,000 words you want to select. If I were the judge of this contest I would want to judge your hook - thus would want the opening pages.

Angela. It is the first 5K words. There is also a number of what appears to be your 'Captain May I" rules. They had any number of 'exactly' how the story had to be formatted. Hopefully I managed to get though the minefield. Again I don't have a of hope of winning although I am hoping to get far enough along to receive (fingers crossed) a positive review. That could be used to perhaps help me get my foot in the door.
Being careful not to poison my chances, I did see plenty of advertising for Create Space. Obliviously, this contest is being used to generate business, but I was half-way thinking of doing so anyways. So many dreamers, but so few will see theirs come true.
HOJ has been entered and only time will time if it'll be file 13, or will actually get to a point where it'll be read. Thanks to everyone who helped me get it ready and helped calmed me down enough to get this done. Flighty? Me? :)
