I just found this article in The Independent newspaper which may be of interest to readers:
From Minnie to Mickey (and all they did was turn off a gene).
The gist of the article is that a group of scientists have developed a simple genetic-based (a modified virus?) technique which can convert the oestrogen producing cells in an adult female mouse to producing normal male levels of testosterone.
The implication is that in several years time, this treatment (and presumably its inverse too) should be available in humans, saving on constant taking of pills or injections for those wanting to go on HRT.

Genetic Corrections
Good Afternoon:
In my "Hala's Snow Day", the thought that they would some day implant Female Sexual Organs successfully was there, though I apparently did not state it that clearly, because most people did not even tumble to the idea that it was a TG story at all. I wanted to write a story, where the T element sank into proper perspective and included more, real life experiences. Apparently I missed slightly.
Even now, Geneticists, have grown an actual beating Pig's heart from just a few cells, so with the latest component, shown in your link, it grows much more likely that we can eventually change genders fully and perhaps with out surgery. That posibility may be 20-100 years away, but should the human race survive ... My real hope is that people like us would be identified very close to conception and a genetic correction would be given to the fetus, thus making it posible for ALL Tness to disappear; perhaps making the whole GBLT issue to be a thing of the past. Not that it is evil, but that it would spare our whole subset the life time of pain we now suffer.
