Do unto others as you would want others do unto you.
If that would be a rule then the waters here would be smooth sailing.

Alternate Golden Rule

Thank you Joanne206 for adding to your comment something that I mentioned in a PM to you.
However, as you posted it, it could be read as a quote from me. That would be improper. Part of my PM to you is as follows.
A contemporary (approximately)of Jesus was a Rabbi know as Hillel the Elder. In Jewish lore and elsewhere he is famous for coining his own Golden rule. It is:
"What is hateful to oneself should not be done to one's neighbor...." . It is often stated in the same language as Jesus' Golden Rule as "Do not do unto others, that which you do not want them to do to you".
I did not post this originally as a reply or comment to Joanne206's blog, because I did not want to start any religious or philosophical debates. (We need to give Erin a rest so that she can get back to piano lessons :-) - see her blog) Since Joanne206 did post it I needed to have the proper attribution listed. I do not want to be accused of plagiarism, especially by the several folks on this site who I know are familiar with Rabbi Hillel.
PLEASE NO nasty debates.

I rathe liked Hienlien's golden rule
"Do unto others as they would do unto you, only do it first"
er I know that's bit preemptive but what the hell.
Different Version, Same Idea
A slightly more colorful way I was taught this by Gunny Hesser was;
"Do unto others before the bastards have a chance to do it to you."
Nancy Cole
"You may be what you resolve to be."

Turning the other cheek
The Welsh Rugby XV of a few years ago reputedly followed the dictum "Get your retaliation in first".
They may still do.
