Edeyn I'm developing a slight twinge in the back of my right hand -- the onset of carpal tunnel. So, this quest for a million words in November is going to be literally painful, as well as literarily painful. My wordcount as of 5:30am US Eastern time, 11 November 2008, is 408,600. So, I'm at a landmark, but still got a LOOONG way to go! If you want to drop some cash toward a worthy cause, The Office of Letters and Light qualifies, and you can do it at my fundraising page here:

As in...

Big enough to BE the coffee table?

Edyen, an over-the-counter anti-inflamitory such as

ibuprofen or naproxen sodium taken before and after typing, a carpal tunnel wrist brace if you have one and making sure you are at a good ergonomic position – height, tilt, etc -- to your keyboard will help. I think you could even try icing down the wrist(s) after a long typing secession like sports players ice troublesome joists to minimize swelling. Good nutrition and proper hydration couldn’t hurt. In away you are an athlete.

This is info gathered from my sisters cycling magazines and from people I know who have the problem. Ask your doctor, a nurse or a physical therapist who handles carpal tunnel for a profesonal opinion plus you do have your odd biochemistry so I imagine drugs might act different on you. The biomechanics, brace and iceing should be safe though.

Please take care of yourself.

Carpal Tunnel problems

I have discovered that some simple exercises before you type anything will minimize the likelihood of carpal tunnel worsening. Pain medications only mask the damage.

I have empirically verified these as extremely effective in a school setting. If nothing else, they keep your wrists and fingers from becoming tired. If you would like a description of such, I can provide them for you. In my estimation, no one should begin typing without doing these exercises. The damage is often cumulative over time.

Love may be all we need, but many of us only know it by its shadow.
