A word of warning

Just to warn you all, my laptop is at it again. Slow running and constant crashes are making it hard to finish chapters of the stories I'm working on and the the story I was working on for the February contest. So Twice Removed may be delayed and worst case scenario I may drop out of site if it dies again. This hard drive was a used one and I never expected the fix to last this long with all the other hardware issues I was having.

So if I drop out of sight you all know why, but I will keep plugging away for as long as I can manage.

*hugs to you all*

drive

I'm pretty sure it's SATA but I'm not even sure if the hard drive is the only issue. My laptop is an Acer Aspire 5253 BZ434 and I've had it over 3 years. For the past two years all of the onboard hardware has been failing. temp fixes and using external keyboard, mouse etc have been all I can do to keep the damn thing running. Roughly half the crashes have been due to core memory dumps. I was getting the same issues before my last hard drive went the way of the dinosaurs so it's possible the RAM is flawed too. The only thing that seems to work decently is the LCD screen *sigh*

It nominally comes with 2 2GB

It nominally comes with 2 2GB DDR3 sticks of ram.

I may have a couple, but almost all of my laptop memory is DDR2.

I'll get a life when it's proven and substantiated to be better than what I'm currently experiencing.

if it is

if its ddr3 or ddr2 i can pull a couple sticks out of my systems i normally have overage in memory department

The online manual said this

The online manual said this for the RAM: Memory Type: DDR3 PC3-10600, DDR3 (non-ECC) Maximum Memory: 8GB Slots: 2 and the hard drive is SATA. The manual says that the hard drive it came with was 500 gb but I'm limping along on an used 80gb with a lot of bad sectors.

I might also be able to

I might also be able to scrounge a hard drive, even if I can't find memory.

Otherwise, I have two motherboard/cpu combos that I repaired that it turns out I don't have cases for.

Sadly laptops are far more prone to failure

They are portable and convenient but a desktop will beat most lappies in ease of getting fixed and endurance actually.

I'm on my fifth laptop now but have only had one desktop in the last 10 years. Yes the desktop is slow as molasses but by God it still can run an editing program without a hitch. Yes it is an old Dell 8250 with the old Pentium 4 chip in it. I don't use it as much anymore but it still does the job in a pinch.

A bit of Linux and it can probably still do a good number of things. Oh, and the beauty of it is that thrift stores are lousy with them.

laptop desktop

i have a laptop an hp pavilion g7 running windows 7 i still have it running and it took an act of congress but my desktop is a dell i forget the moddle number i took my lapotop turned it into a desktop i personally like desktops more but as a computer tech i have to carry parts for most of them

I like desktops

because they're easier to customize, but laptops are more portable. Right now I'll just be happy with something that's not crashing every time I get somewhere on a story or chapter :/

2nd Attempt

Have you tried blowing some compressed air into the vents to get any dust out?

I had a lappy that was over heating and the symptoms were similar. It would randomly run slow ( as the CPU went into heat protection mode ) and shut down.

I tried that

And it doesn't seem to be a heating issue, it actually runs surprisingly cool. Most likely it's the hard drive and/or RAM.

If you have bad sectors on

If you have bad sectors on the hard drive, it's the hard drive.

As for the keyboard, they do fail, but the internal keyboard generally costs less than $25 to get a replacement from ebay or amazon.
