And no, I wasn't alive back then. My grandfather was, though. He made his living as a butcher back in the thirties, moving between Kansas, Oklahoma, Texas and Missouri as the work was available. I also know, from personal experience, that he was one mean SOB if provoked and a sane person did not want to make him mad at them.
Back when the original Bonnie and Clyde movie with Warren Beatty and Faye Dunaway came out he once told me that he'd known Clyde Barrow. Who was a mean SOB (that coming from one) who grandad wouldn't turn his back on.
Just an interesting bit of hearsay there.

Clyde Barrow had some relatives that lived in Mount Pleasant TX, where my mom lived. Grandma told me about the day Bonnie and Clyde came to town. They only stayed a day and Clyde stole a Ford on his way out of town. Clyde was partial to fast Fords.

Clyde also had relatives in Irving, Texas that lived less than a mile south of me. I went to school with the Barrow kids. They were a pretty good bunch and red headed as a woodpecker. We were all dirt poor and only had family as our treasure but we got along. Nobody turned Clyde in when he came to visit because he would kill you just as fast as look at you.

One time they were running from authorities in a little berg southwest of Creston in Platte Center Iowa. They stayed near a small river that night and walked up to a little farmstead hoping to get a meal. The woman assumed they were a couple stranded with car problems. She asked if they had eaten and fixed them a good breakfast when they hadn't.
The woman was told later who she helped and that it probably saved her life not knowing who they were. She either didn't know or didn't say where they went after that.
