I have just returned from the Shrewsbury Folk Festival, where, what with workshops and sessions, I spent about six hours each day playing. For three days, and two hours on the first evening. I was playing bodhran a little, but all the rest was mandolin, mandola and, er, ahem, nothing to see here, move along, um... banjo. I know I got photographed in the big session, but the rest of the time was music. Nancy Kerr, on fiddle, with left-hand pizzicato in the middle of her bowing; Lady Maisery, three young women including Hannah James, whose PA system and all electrics blew at the start of their gig. They took a vote, asking the audience, and then smiled and carried on without power. And so many other great musicians.
I sang, I played, I cried. And there was beer. Not only that, but I got the pictures for both "Ride" book covers.

Obviously a good time then.
Okay so you play the b---o as well. So what? Everybody is entitled to their personal foibles.
I play a tin whistle and a h-------a (badly - well very badly actually) but it gives me endless private pleasure when far, far away from other ears!
Reason for choosing to play small pocket sized instruments is so that nobody else would see me carrying some huge instrument case aboard ship. If people saw a guitar case or some such instrument, you were almost invariably prejudged as some sort of hippy or something and you had to work doubly hard to get people to trust your work or respect it.
Must have been a good time then.
Bevs.
I Whistle too!
But not a usually tin, I have a couple of good wooden ones. I also mostly play for my self I am not very good yet. But it is fun.
A wooden Tin Whistle is usually called a Flageolet, an English Flageolet to be precise, one variant has a thumb hole. The wooden Tin whistle type one is making a bit of a come back in connection with Medieval and Renaissance festivals and such. Which is why I have Wooden ones, I am in to that. Of course I have a couple of tin ones too and a good plastic one I hide in my bag.
Better to have a plastic ear and a tin whistle---
Than a plastic whistle and a tin ear?

It's not original but perhaps
It's not original but perhaps appropriate:-
Things you never hear said:
"That's the banjo player's Porche."
"Cor, look at her! Yeah, she's with the banjo player."
Yes, but----
In the movie "Deliverance" the name of the song was NOT "Duelling Pianos" nor "Duelling French Horns". Further, the theme from "The Beverly Hillbillies" was NOT played by a Moog Synthesizer.

Just for the record
I've never ACTUALLY seen the movie "Deliverance".

sounds wonderful
would have loved to been there. Cant play, but I can appreciate those who do ....
I'm sorry, I just don't understand....
What's so "bad" about having the ability to and actually playing a BANJO! Wish I could, Just saying,! Hugs, Taarpa
Ps. Would of loved to have been there too!
Sounds like a great time!
Almost everything I know of Shrewsbury Folk Festival comes from your stories or blogs, but it sure sounds like a great time. Your fingers will recover soon, I hope. Besides more music, there are new stories of you to type, we hope!
That you got to make music happen is the important part. The only reason we know to tease you about the banjo is that we read the jokes about them in Ride, so I suppose we must cut you some slack. :)
Some clips
Not all from this year, but a flavour. This is Lady Maisery, Hannah James of the amazing eyes and clogging on the squeeze box. Oh, and a tall ginger fiddler...

Thanks for those pointers.
Thanks for those pointers. While I figured some big concerts, I think I pictured much of the festival more like the session in the last video.
I'd looked at the festival site, and recognized several performers I know and like (Afro Celt Soundsystem, Be Good Tanyas, Capercaillie, and Oysterband), others were unfamiliar to me. I do like what I'm now hearing from Lady Maisery, and Show of Hands, which I hadn't known of, so thanks!
As for the clogging, I got tired just watching that. :) I'll leave that to the youngsters. I do now want to pick up my harp again, though, at least until I get frustrated again by my lack of skill/talent.
And in a moment of l'espirit
And in a moment of l'espirit de l'escalier so slow, I would let it go at this point, had I any shame, I must suggest: Don't fret about your fingertips. I'm sure they'll be fine. ;)
