Murder on the Highway

I witnessed a murder today. It wasn't an accident, let there be no doubt about it. Before you get too worried; no, it wasn't a person, it was a young kitten. I was on Arkansas Highway 10 about four miles south of Perryville, Arkansas. This is a pretty good downhill stretch with a passing for the uphill traffic. I spotted a small animal moving slowly in the middle lane, and as I passed it, I realized it was a kitten, perhaps about 10 weeks old. It had long hair, a dark tail and head, and creamy long hair on its body. I pulled off the road about a hundred and fifty feet down hill and started walking back to the kitten I was about half way there when I heard a car coming up the hill. By this time the kitten was almost to the dotted line between the uphill lanes. I vigorously signaled for the driver to slow down. I know the driver saw me; however what happened next was beyond belief. The driver swerved across the line and deliberately hit the kitten. It was no mistake. I heard the thump.

I couldn't believe it. I remember hollering "No!" at the top of my voice as the car, a black SUV/crossover moved back between the lines and sped off. I was in shock and started sobbing like I haven't cried since I was in grade school. There was nothing I could do about it, and I felt so damn helpless. The little body was still there this afternoon.

I hope that person lives a long life before going to their selected hell. I hope they wake up every night feeling the terror that poor little kitten must have felt in the last seconds of its life. Why would anyone do something like that?

I'm thinking about going back and putting up a sign at that location that says "Kitten Murderer, You know who you are."
My heart aches tonight, and I will probably never get over this.
