What's wrong with a little drama, my friend? ...lol It makes it more fun (when the team I'm pulling for wins, that is), although blowouts are better for the blood pressure.
It really was,
a great game, 7 goals in football, four in less than a quarter hour, won in extra time. But I do have a bad heart (really, I wasn't that nervous; I trusted the USAians to win a kick off. But that last goal was more fun.)
Talking of team sports
it seems okay for every sport except cycling to have domination by one one country - or in the case of swimming, by one person. How is it fair that the US or any other country could have three swimmers in an Olympic final and win all the medals but they can't do it in cycling. You can have two Jamaicans win gold and silver in the men's 100m sprint, but not in cycling.
In the previous Olympics, team GB won most of the cycling medals, including gold and silver in the men's sprint. They changed the rules to stop domination happening by one country in just one sport. It's ridiculous, and team GB are winning most of them again anyway, except we can't win all the medals in any one event.
If the Olympics is about the best athletes in the world competing for the gold, it doesn't appear to be the case for cycling. Just a thought, though it was nice to see Jason Kenny win the gold to go with his silver from last time, for the men's individual sprint, and to add to his others in the team sprint.

Aren't the qualification standards
and rules set by the international federation for each sport? That's why wrestling gives out two bronzes, that's who sent the badminton teams packing, etc.

Not just cycling.
The number four in women's all-round gymnastics' qualifications, wasn't allowed in the finales because she was number three from her country (then that girl (yeah, I think they're all girls even with the new age restrictions) had the top score in the team all rounds) (Why do gymnasts have to do this so much? And why can't swimmers just race from one side of the pool to the other, or do some laps; we don't tell runners to run with their hands behind their backs so they don't go their fastest?)

I've been watching the sailing and 5 of the top 10 Finn sailors in the world are British but only Ainslie could compete. It was a touch and go but he managed Gold after a nail-biting medal race at the end.
Swimming seems to offer opportunities for numerous medals but Ben Ainslies 4 golds and one silver have had to be won at 5 separate Olympics and involve 20 hours or so of racing each time.
The UK's not doing too badly, though. Third in the medal table after China and the USA which both have a much greater population.
I'm sure you won't agree, Jan, but I don't think any sport than can't be objectively judged by tape, points or watch etc should have a place in the Olympics. That would include gymnastics, diving, most ice skating and especially the ridiculous synchronised swimming.

I agree. Of course it will never happen. The Olympics are a huge money machine dependent on TV revenue. They want the sports that will get the most viewers on their rear ends in front of the flat screen (formerly the tube). They also want the viewers to be in desirable demographics for advertisers; young, money to spend, and women.

...since so much of my life feels like it's in time-delay. Anyone here remember Micki King? Broke her arm on her next to last dive in '68; gold medal in 72. One of my favorites.

While I wanted the USA to win, I didn't want Canada to lose. And, yes, this Yankee thinks the ref did give the USA a goal on that handball call in the box.

Well, as a referee I actually agree with the penalty given to the US. Most of us called out for it here. What surprised me was the call that gave them the free kick which set it up honestly. Even if the keeper held onto the ball for over 35 seconds (instead of the 6 allowed), you don't often see it called. (Also, if you watch the replay, it hits off of two girls' arms with both of them raising them, which is where the penalty comes from.)
That said, it was an amazing game. Sinclair is one of the best in the world and I will be rooting for Canada in the Bronze medal game against France. And here's hoping the final with USA-Japan is as much a classic as yesterday's match (though maybe a little less stressful). :D

but only one of those is a guarantee, right? He's good, too bad he is so slow out of the blocks or we'd see some real speed (I really would like to see him jump; it would negate his biggest problem. He could show that Beamon guy, right?)
