I was on line earlier today and found a site that had a report of a Trangendered person harassed by the VA Police because she used the womens bathroom she was ejected from the hospital and given a TRO. She currently has an attorney and is seeking damages.
One of the commenters on the article talked about Veterans Health Administration Directive 2011-024.

AS an intersexed individual or fro any veteran who is using the VA Healthcare system tthis directive tells the VA Health care system how to treat transgendered patients.

I read the directive and discovered that the VA Health Care System is required to designate me as female because I believe myself to be the female gender.

So I was thinking that once the Federal Government has me listed as a female I can take that medical paper to the State DMV and change my M to an F.

Uhmm, YMMV (your milage may vary) due to the lack of support from state laws. Every state has the right to administer their state licensing procedures, and at least in Oklahoma, I could change my name with a name change order, but couldn't get an F on my DL until after I had a letter following my surgery. I understand that California is different (who knew!!) and you can get your gender marker changed on your license with a declaration and name change. However, the federal govt. Social Security gender designation requires a surgery letter, though you can change your name when you change it on your license. A month after surgery I got all my docs changed except my birth certificate because Oklahoma is a Republican ridden piece of crap this political cycle, and they refused to pass a law allowing us to change our BC. I wish I was born somewhere else, like California, sometimes.

All the VA regs do is reduce the four letter barnyard terminology we are often subjected to by idots in the VA system. I have a friend in Mississisppi that has had to go to Hilary Clinton to get them to call her by her legal (changed) name, and treat her as a human being, but it is gradually penetrating their VA collective asses that they can't harrass trans vets anymore. She had to drive two hours to get to a VA hospital that did what they were supposed to.

Social Security Name Change

According to the Social security number I have I am a female, I presented a legal name change and they (SS) did the rest. They did change my gender and I have not had surgery due to a bodily disease.

All I can tell you is what I

All I can tell you is what I and others have experienced in Oklahoma. My name change was in 2006 and I was told by social security that I could not get the gender marker changed until surgery. I was also retired in 2007 and my medicare card had my new name and a big M on it. I was told that as long as my name and social number corresponded I was legal for the IRS and Social Security. However, it made for all kinds of crap with insurance and presecriptions. The gender marker was not changed until after surgery.

Question, did you have a court order name and gender change, or a special letter from a doctor declaring your female? If not, could they person ding the changes have been operating on the basis of appearance or sympathy?

So, in what state did this occur?

When I was in Cleveland, they just did not know what to make of me. I hear relatively good comments about Buffalo. I did not need to go to the one in Indianapolis when I was there. VA Hospitals differ from zone to zone, and I feel sorry for anyone who has to endure unkind treatment.

Tennessee

I think it is Tennessee, or maybe some other state close by, that does not recognize sex changes, and will not change your birth certificate.

How are unfortunates born in this state supposed to handle that?

State law

there was a report linked here a little whie ago about that state, where a transwoman had gone to her local licensing office to change her driving license, using her social security documents as evidence. The office refused, and insisted she remained male. So, she went out to the front of the building and took her top off. She was arrested for indecent exposure. Her defence, of course, was that if she was maleit wasn't indecent.

I live in TN and all of my

I live in TN and all of my documents are changed. In a way it is all in how you work the system. If you are going through transition and have had a name change it might be easier getting your passport changed first and then trying for a amended DL. That's not how I did it, but I don't play fair.

Also as a Vet, there are ways to deal with the system. On Monday, I have an appointment and after that I am complaining that the endocrinology people are being idiots and are discriminating against me, all against regulations. I am taking it up with the patient advocate. All nice and within the system and I am going to win.

If you know who that happened to and if it was in TN have them contact me or TAVA. This is an education issue and person by person the system gets corrected. If it happened here in TN I can totally get this fixed, because the regulations are in her favor, so long as she did nothing stupid after the officer arrived.

I may not be overly out, but I fight like I always have with ninja like skill and precision. And since I have a TN DL that says F and the VA gives me my hormones, I am clearly winning.

It's all in the reflexes.
