I know we all have car problems from time to time, and in speaking to a friend about mine realised she'd had problems too.
Mine started a few days ago when I noticed a funny whining noise on accelerating. I wondered if it was the turbo - I have turbo diesel, Renault Megane. I didn't use it yesterday, and when I did today, the noise was worse. I called the garage and cancelled my afternoon patients and took the car in. It was the turbo and it was close to blowing up according to the garage, which usually results in it taking the rest of the engine with it. Repairs will take several days once they get the parts etc. It will also cost an arm and a leg. Tomorrow, I'll have to cycle to work - thankfully, the weather is fine.
My friend, Anne, had her Jaguar hit by a Megane yesterday, though fortunately she wasn't hurt and her car is driveable. The Megane driver drove off after the collision, so has committed at least two offences. I hasten to add, it wasn't my car that hit hers.

Been in that situation before
Been there many times,most recently with the truck I know own. I bought it back in 06 then 2 weeks later had blown the engine by running it hot,cost me $2000 usd then less than a year later the top half of the engine blew thanks to heating coil going out that was $550usd down the drain since then it's been in the shop 4 other times all in all I have spent more than I paid for the truck. Whats worse is it's a Chevrolet silverado 2500 hd. What is suppose to be one of the best trucks around in both 2 wheel drive an 4 wheel drive.

Maybe it was assembled on a Monday or a Friday? Those are the lemon days for auto manufacturing, if I remember correctly. Think the lemon law might apply? Is there a history of the problems and number of times it has been in the shop since it was put together?

I Wonder...
I wonder how much of the diagnoses we get from auto repair shops are scare tactics and snow jobs?
Some time back, my father owned a Peugeot turbo diesel, and it started making funny noises and losing power and such. A shop told him it needed a new turbo unit. I don't remember the whole story, why he went to another shop run by a former Peugeot factory mechanic, but the upshot was, all he needed was a new o-ring. A few dollars and no time at all and he was on his way.
I'm never sure whether it's an issue of honesty or experience and competence, but there seems to be a wide range of whatever-it-is when you go to a mechanic.
Sometimes, these things work out to a benefit. My current car had been diagnosed incorrectly to the prior owner, who, rather than get the very expensive repair, sold me the car cheap. It turned out to only need something inexpensive, so I won! It required patience and a bit of geek-foo, though, before the true diagnosis revealed itself.
