"True Hermaphroditism" is quite rare, and there isn't even full agreement as to what it consists of. Here's an interesting article on the type of developmental anomaly that can result in cases like this: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chimera_(genetics)

Basically, what happens is that pieces of two zygotes merge before reaching the embryo stage, and if the embryo survives and develops enough to reach birth (most serious genetic and developmental errors result in miscarriage), the resultant child carries tissue from two different genetic sources. If one is male and the other female, it's possible that sexual organs of both might be present, although usually one will be more developed than the other.

That kind of developmental anomaly is different from most intersex conditions. The more common type involves a fetus that develops from a single set of cells, and any one of a number of disorders that affect the normal fetal development of sexual organs from those cells. This can involve too many or too few sex chromosomes, or defects of specific genes (which may be on other chromosomes besides the sex ones) involving hormones or hormone receptors, and not necessarily even the ones for sex hormones. Human fetal development is quite complex and a lot of interrelated things have to work out correctly in the right order and the right timeframe to end up "normal." The acronym DSD, for Disorders of Sexual Development, is now the preferred term for these intersex conditions.

Interesting...

And a few commentators on that article came up with pertinent points (in amongst lots more tabloid readers who'd chanced upon it...)

Scallywag: With no mention of Ryalu’s consent to the hysterectomy, we’re left to assume he wanted it without question. The organs were not causing the pain; it was the hernia. God forbid he go on intersex? Another difference equated with defect?

Dakota471: Are we to assume that the female organs were the cause of the pain? Or did he have a hernia, and they just removed the rest because "it didn't belong there?"

Tilveran: It's perfectly natural. Nature doesn't conform to our stereotypes, end of story.

Michael Bain: wait a sec are we sure this wasn't a gift that the doctors discarded like they always do? Think about the abortion rates in that part of the world. Maybe this was God's way of telling us "I can create life, while you needlessly destroy it!" God help us!

Meanwhile, there were several commentators with a misunderstanding of genetics, blaming it either on pollution (especially as the hospital was in Bhopal) or inbreeding.

However, the comments I quoted above make interesting discussion points - was the female reproductive system responsible for the pain / hernia, or was it something else they discovered and decided to remove because it didn't fit? The surgeon's comment appeared very much of the "If it looks like a duck..." ilk.

And finally, on a lighter note, someone was evidently feeling in a poetic mood and created an appropriate limerick...

"Shocked and appalled" just doesn't cut it, anymore.

I'm so SICK of hearing about crap like this. I was born intersexual and they pretty much did to me what they did to the Indian man. I find it abhorrent that he went in complaining of stomach pains, they found a hernia and... wait, what's this? Oh, that can't be there! He's a man! *snip-snip*

There are no words to describe the level of anger, hatred, and disgust that I feel, right now.
