Music Inspires the Savage Beast

I'm fairly certain I've blogged extensively in the past about how music tends to affect my muse in strange ways, but I just had probably the best example ever of this phenomenon while working on Boys Don't Cry today (Don't worry, I'm still working on Robin too :-) She'll be back soon).

Music helps me think. Actually, any distraction helps me think, be it listening to eclectic music choices, playing video games, watching TV. Having something to focus on frees up the creative side of my brain to do what it does best. It's a neat trick I picked up from watching The X-Files that I didn't think would actually work, but there you have it.

Anyway, I was listening to some really dark music while writing Boys Don't Cry, and really torturing Sarah mentally. Suddenly Cheap Trick - I Want You to Want Me came up, and I was so engrossed in my writing that I didn't realize it until about halfway through the scene, when a little romantic interlude sort of snuck in on me.

It's a scene I've wanted to touch on again for awhile now, and given circumstances, it just fit so darn well that I decided to keep it. It just kind of amused me how, subconsciously, this scene worked its way in without me really realizing what 'inspired' it until I stopped for a drink of water.

And now I think I'm going to put "Mister Crowley" on repeat for this next part, sending Sarah to school.
