At 5.30pm on BBC Radio 4 today the iPM programme was particularly interesting to the trans community. Presenter, Eddie Mair, was talking to a former beautician called Penny, who specialises in helping transexuals with their appearance.

"They look in the mirror and they're disgusted. They don't like themselves." Former beautician Penny explains to Eddie Mair how she offers friendship, support and make-up tips to transsexuals. Also, listener Christina - who nominated Penny for the iPM New Year's Honour - speaks about living unhappily as a man, and how after 60 years she is beginning a new life as a woman. You can listen to it here for the next seven days:

I think she does our community a real service.

Eddie's blogged about it here (and put a copy of the audio):

In true BBC tradition, there are links to various related organisations supplied by the Action Line, and several of the six commentators have also supplied their own links to relevant organisations.

I heard it too ...

... and was somewhat surprised but pleasantly so. The subject was treated very sensibly and without sensation. I'm quite a fan of Eddie Mair anyway and this has helped to justify my admiration of him as a broadcaster.

Nice one.

Well, Penny soooo deserves this honour. It was her who taught me many things, the greatest of which was confidence. She has helped so many. Well done Penny.
