John Wooden, noted philosopher and author passed away today at 99. He was also known for his work in the area of sports.

My story Exitus Acta Probat is based in part on his writings.

He's well-known for the discipline he applied to his players. The best college basketball player of all time, Bill Walton, came back to UCLA one year after summer vacation with long hair and a beard. He walked into Coach Wooden's office and stated he had no intention of following Wooden's team rules regarding long hair and a clean-shaven face. Wooden looked up at his all-American and calmly said, "I admire your fierce independence and understand completely your position; we're sure going to miss you on the court this year."
