When this song was new, the Berlin wall was just coming down and it was emblematic of what was happening then. The world was changing and we all wanted something better. The walls that separated us were literally falling. For a brief little time, some of us dared to hope the world would be a better place.

To have our hopes and dreams ground into the dirt was so awful.

We were stupid enough to think that somehow, we could make a better world.

It didn't happen.
