An invitation! ^__^

A few weeks ago, I posted here that some of my in-person role-playing game opportunities had pretty much evaporated for various reasons, and that I was interested to see if anyone here would be interested in doing a play-by-post game. A couple of people responded, and a few of my friends here where I live who were in the old group but still want to play (the ones I have in mind both know about this part of me; they had schedule conflicts or they would have stayed in the other game).

So. I have a few options I am willing to run (due to responses here and among my rl friends). All are pre-written adventures, which will let me get my gaming fix while still leaving enough time and energy to (I hope!) do other writing.

The options are, in the order I would prefer (subject to people's preferences):

  • The series of "iconic" adventures that were written for the third edition of Dungeons & Dragons, which are fairly straightforward and build from first level all the way to twentieth, with a nice, overarching plot crossing between the individual parts.
  • A couple of modules written for the 3.5 revision of D&D that flow fairly well from one to the next, and which I've wanted to run for a couple of years.
  • The "World at War" adventure sequence for the Scion trilogy.
  • The Return to the Temple of Elemental Evil module, also for D&D third ed.

Please post here or PM me if you would like to join in, and if you prefer one or more of these options over another. Play will likely take place on RolePlay onLine, unless someone has a better suggestion, or a strong objection. ^__^ I'd like to build the game with players from here and from my RL group, if possible, rather than trying to recruit from "outside the family" as it were. I'll leave it open until the 16th, and then we'll try to begin.

I'm looking forward to this, I hope other people are still / will now be interested too! ^∇^

ADDENDUM!

Here's the introduction I wrote for the game I will be running:

Your dreams of late have been unsettling at best, and screaming nightmares more often than not. So strong and so often have you dreamt the same dream now, that you have left home seeking your fortune and solace from the torments of the night. After leaving, your dreams have eased somewhat, but they still persist, and now they drive you to places beyond those of which you've ever heard. On the road, you've maybe met familiar faces, likewise suffering from the same nighttime visitations, or strangers whose complaints are eerily similar to yours. Banding together, you seek the resolution of your visions, hoping that the world, at least for now, will not burn...

-*-*-*-

A band of man-like creatures rides over the horizon, swords drawn, screaming at a village in the valley below. Nine of them ride in the lead, their weapons gleaming in the dwindling sun, the lurid light intimating the slaughter to come. Suddenly, the light is cut off, but you find yourself unable to look up, your gaze locked on the deadly scene before you. Red heat pulses from the sky above you, beating down, drying, burning. The leaves on the trees around you wither and drop, bursting into ash before they hit the ground. Where the ash lands, stick-like hands break the soil and claw toward the still-unviewable sky. Next to you, a single pale fruit hangs from one of the now-barren trees, then at last drops to the ground as the creatures, riding, reach you, their sword, ten now in number, plunging down toward you...

-*-*-*-

You wake again, sweat cold on your skin, your throat raw and swollen. The dreams have struck again. You hope, though, that this will almost be the end of them. If the old woodsman you spoke with yesterday was correct, then the focus of your dreams, the place you've been traveling toward, the place, if you're lucky, whose name is absent from your nightly torture, the village named Oakhurst is only half a day's journey away...

Pretty standard game fare, I guess, and a little rough in a couple of spots, but good to go with.

I will be running the "Iconic" modules for Dungeons & Dragons 3rd Edition, basing the game at rpol.net, under the title "[DnD3.0] Shadows of Scarlet and Night". Feel free to take a look, and, starting tomorrow, feel free to Request-to-Join! Even if you don't join, though, do feel free to look! ^__^

Doesi tt have to be D&D?

Maybe you can adapt one of the story universes here on BCTS. MORFS? Whateley? MIBD?

Or, if you want to be particularly evil (Isn't that a requirement for a game master?) you can let everyone set up their characters, then do a 'great shift.'

Question

With the "great shift" stories, what happens to intersexed persons mew?

-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I know who I am, I am me, and I like me ^^
Bisexual, transsexual, gamer girl, princess, furry that writes horror stories and proud ^^

I know who I am, I am me, and I like me ^^
Transgender, Gamer, Little, Princess, Therian and proud :D

Great Shift

The Great Shift stories don't shift everyone's gender. When the Great Shift occurs, people are randomly shifted into other bodies.

So, an intersexed person may shift into a male body, a female body, or an intersexed body. Meanwhile, some other person will get hir old body.

Sometimes we see karmic justice -- like a big bad meanie meanie getting put into the body of someone who's about to die.

I'm interested

And since I own hard copies of the third edition DnD books, and everything but the player's guide in 3.5 (which shouldn't be too hard to "find" :)) I should be set as far as books. Of course, if you were interested in running a Second Edition game, I've also got a player's guide for it, and I've always wanted to play a really deep game of 2nd Edition DnD :P

Books

My grandson wanted me to download these, so I have them here on the puter if anyone needs a copy. I'll never use them for anything, so someone should use them.

Answers? Maybe.

Ray: It doesn't >have< to be D&D, either in (any of the numerous) settings, nor in system. I prefer to do so however, as the systems are fairly familiar and the settings require little effort on my part, using, as I said, printed scenarios, to make work. The same, though to a lesser degree, with the other system I mentioned: Scion. I am open to other suggestions, though, if there is enough interest and support for them. Do you have a good information repository -- say, encyclopedia-style -- for Whateley? (I've yet to get to reading any of the MORFS or MIBD stories.) Also, do you have a system in mind for running a Whateley game? For that matter, it might even be fun to play a game in Saless' Kittyhawk universe, or in Lilith Langtree's Faerie Queen universe, though with those, I'd rather not presume on their settings, and wait until they either offer a game themselves, or throw them open, and even then, I don't really have anything written for them. Still, it might be interesting. ^__^

As far as a "great shift" sort of thing, I confess to being more than a little leery of doing that, though I suppose that if players were >expecting< the GM to mess with their characters, it wouldn't be as bad. I didn't really have a "suddenly you're a girl (or boy, or dog, depending on preferences)" sort of plan for things. If people have some idea like that for their characters, I'm more than happy to run with it. ^__^ In fact, I'd be disappointed, really, if there weren't at least one character with something going on gender-wise from a group drawn from such a talented set of people!

Princess Chelsea: Ray answered your question RE the Great Shift stories, but from more of a gaming perspective, even if I were playing with that setting, I'm not really too keen on the idea of the random body shuffle at the moment. If you have an idea for a character who is intersexed, or who starts out intersexed and transforms somehow to not be, or to reduce the impact of it, or who somehow become intersexed (going the other direction), I'd be more than happy to hear it. ^__^

Melanie: I'm so glad you are still interested! I was hoping you would be. While a 2nd edition game >would< be fun, I've not looked at those rules for years now, and I'm not even sure where I put my books for it. ^^; Any exception preference among the games I suggested? I will say that the first two are very definitely "dungeon crawl" types, at least for the first few modules. Also, if you've got an idea for character concept, let me know. The "iconic" modules work best if the four classic roles, warrior, sneak, magician, and healer, are filled, but I'm flexible with details and I'm more interested, really, in who the character is than just in what they do.

Stacy: While I can't >Legally< suggest or encourage people to take you up on your >very< generous offer... ^__^

In any case, thank you for making the offer!

If people are wondering about Scion, the third option I offered, think mythologically themed iron-age-ish supers, where you discover that that long-lost parent, or maybe just the "real" gene-donor who left you with your adoptive parents, is one of the gods of the ancient pantheons. Congratulations, you, their child, have the stuff of Legend in your potential, and you just might be useful to your divine progenitor, who is embroiled in a war against the Titans who have broken free of their multi-millennial-prisons in the overworld (or underworld). I have pre-generated characters for that one, as well as a link to the basic rules, for those who might be interested but unfamiliar with the game.

Also, I do have other games I could run, if people >really<, >really< want something else. I just put forward the ones that are most interesting to me at the moment. As always, feedback and suggestions are encouraged! ^__^

Well, you know...

As far as DnD characters go, I tend to play a Rogue, but I'm willing to try any class that's needed to make sure the team keeps a good balance. While I love RPGs, I must sadly admit that my actual experience PLAYING them has been incredibly limited, with problems arising from not having enough committed players, or bad DMs, or a number of other reasons. The last game I played in I was actually the DM, and only had two players to work with, neither one really interested in running a heavily story driven game :P So, I'm up for ANYthing DnD, and I'll learn other systems as needed -- I tend to pick games up pretty quickly, so that shouldn't be a problem.

And, you know, if you really wanna run a Whateley game, I've actually developed my own system for it :D I've got it posted over in the Whateley Academy forums, but I can copy it here too if you want me to -- it's a 2d10 system, and it needs a lot more work before it's really ready for play, but a lot of what's left is things like defining specific skills and powers and such, the kind of things that really need to be played with actively to get them to work right.

Melanie E.

I might...

...take a look at that, if you don't mind, though I think I'll stay with running this for now. I >adore< learning new systems, but it would take a while to be comfortable enough with one to run it, much less to feel like I knew enough about the setting to be confident in running a game in it. ^^; That said, it might be fun to do for the >next< game. ^∇^

A rogue would be excellent. ^__^ I love them too, though I tend to go for the social, talk-my-way-out-of-things sort, rather than the spec-ops infiltrator type that tends to be the more commonly played variant.

Hehe,

I'll PM you the Whateley game if you'd like so you can take a look at it. It's still in a VERY rough form, so like I said before, it'd need plenty of work before being playable -- running a different game would probably be best, and maybe we can work together to improve my Whateley system to get it to a point that it would be easily playable!

My rogues tend to sit more along the lines of a private detective -- Chaotic Good, with stats engineered more towards being able to explore easily, notice the small details and disarm traps or open locks, rather than a really stealth-heavy character, though I do keep those high enough that I can get by as the sneaky-type rogue if I need to. Just as a warning, though, I have this tendency to give any DnD character I play Exotic Weapons Proficiency with the bastard sword, 'cause I like them -- it makes an odd choice for a rogue, but it can be pretty effective when combined with a bow and a few daggers :P

Melanie E.

Very Good Question!

It's been pointed out to me that some may be reluctant to join or request information, worried as they are that I may have more players than I want or need. Don't worry! I can, one way or another, handle any number of people in this, the only practical limit being how many people I can have in any one group at a time before I start trying to get one of them to help out as a sort of co-GM. ^__^ In those terms, the practical limit per group is about 7-8 people. Beyond that, and I'll at least split the group into two, just so that I can keep everyone more closely involved and appropriately challenged, and then I'd start looking to find someone to help out with running things. So, don't worry! Come ahead and have a look-see! ^∇^
