(US) House Votes to Expand Definition of Hate Crimes

This is step towards expanding "the definition of violent federal hate crimes to those committed because of a victim’s sexual orientation, a step that would extend new protection to lesbian, gay and transgender people."

not quite correct...

That doesnt extend ANY protection to transgender people.... It protects sexual orientation, not gender identity. While the two share a great deal, they are very different.

perhaps you should re-read the article. I'll quote the appropriate passage: "broaden the definition to include those committed because of gender, sexual orientation, gender identity or disability". I believe this explicitly states "gender identity".
