On "Countdown," his political news/analysis/commentary show on MSNBC last night, Keith Olbermann used his "Worst Persons In The World" segment to highlight (not to mention rip, tear and shred) a Congressional critic of the Matthew Shepard anti-hate-crimes bill that was later passed in yesterday's session.

Random slide, World's Worst program segment.

Congresswoman Virginia Foxx, Republican from North Carolina, representing NC's 5th district, Winston-Salem, stood on the floor, with Matthew Shepard's mother sitting in the gallery, and called the story of the Shepard killing a hoax, insisting the death had nothing to do with the young man being gay, and certainly no justification for a hate-crimes bill.

Olbermann's absolute denunciation of Foxx is a treat to behold. Just for starters, he called it, "The most despicable thing said on the floor of the House in decades." It was one of the strongest unequivocal, unapologetic arguments I've ever heard from a straight, mainstream media figure on behalf of gay people. It comes about 2:40 into this segment:

(apologies for making you watch the 15-second ad that precedes the clip)

I've enjoyed Keith's work as a sportscaster. I've enjoyed his humorous, manly, bighearted political analysis and commentary, but this... This was something really special. It made me even prouder to be his fan.

... there's a narrow window of useful political (and sometimes religious) discussion relevant to TG issues. This is one of them. If such things get hot, I move them off the front page.

All such policies practiced by me and my assistants have the aim of protecting authors and stories for the enjoyment of everyone. We may make misteaks but we try to do right by everyone.

I'll have to watch Olbermann's report myself.

Hugs to all,
Erin

Wow

I'm trying to come up with something sarcastic and witty, but I don't think I can add anything.

GG miss Foxx. You can retire now. From everything.

He Certainly Didn't Hold Back

Good for Keith. I poked around the net a bit. There's lots of discussion regarding Ms Foxx. She's issued a weak retraction of the word "hoax" and is basically unavailable today.

Go, Keith, Go!

I've been watching Countdown for years now, and Keith's been hitting hard on prejudice and hate from day one. He's even been awarded by GLAAD for his commentary on gay marriage, slamming the bigots.

He made Foxx his "Worst Person" for two consecutive days, which is remarkable, but I've been listening to Foxx's BS in the US House and she's a moron, IMNSHO!
