What has happened to the Daily Voting?

Taxonomy upgrade extras:

I was wondering where the Daily Voting Table that used to be at the bottom of the left hand side column had disappeared to. I always used to like checking who was running "Top of the Pops"!

Feature throttling on the web site

When the load on the site is very heavy the system software can turn off some of the features of the site that use the most server resources. I'm not certain if this is what happened or not at the present time. I'll try to check it out and see but this one may have to wait for Erin to take a look at it.

As far as I know the new quad core server will be shipped on the 25th and should be at Erin's place at the beginning of next week. It may take a week or two to get it in shape to go online then as much as another week or two to move BCTS over to it after some extensive testing to be sure that it won't die a premature death. Sometimes new hardware has a nasty habit of doing that. We're hoping that the new server will give the site the power it needs to grow for the future. Right now we're just trying to hang on with the last server upgrade we did. The latest server is stable but at times it does groan a bit under the growing load on it from many of the former FM users visiting it and now starting to post here as well.

Erin and I appreciate the patience that her users have shown concerning the ups and downs that we've experienced due to the unexpected very rapid growth the problems at the other major sites has caused. Both of us had projected that it would be at least a year or more before a new server would be required just before FM crashed and StorySite stopped posting for some much needed upgrades to their software. There was just no way for us to predict the incredible growth that those two events would cause to BCTS.

My own site, Stardust, is now running on a slightly less powerful version of the new server Erin has purchased. Testing there shows that the extra memory available and the enhancements that using a 64 bit version of our chosen operating system should make the difference in being able to handle all of the traffic both currently and in the future.

I hope that Erin will be able to look into the problems that you've outlined when she gets a few spare moments in the next few hours or so.

Daily Voting -- not working

erin's picture

I can't seem to get the daily voting widget that used to be near the bottom of the left column to work reliably right now. I'm rather exhausted with trying things and have decided that the problem is probably that I have got some wrong idea about how it used to work and have now gotten things so mixed up that it is currently hopeless for me to untangle it.

I'll try again later in the week, or next, but for now, I'm tired of looking at the bloody thing. :)

Hugs,
Erin

Sorry, Erin…

…if I've given you a headache, so don't worry. One of these days you'll have a flash of inspiration and you'll solve it in a trice.
