When I Was Young
We were told in high school religion class by the priest that since homosexuality does not exist in animals we humans shouldn't be doing it either.
Those of us who lived on farms looked at each other and wondered if our animals were uniquely perverted.
People have used false equivalence, misconceptions, and outright lies to condemn what they don't understand for years. And, if books present facts that challenge your bigotry, the easiest thing to do is to ban them.
The hear no evil people would vote for a man who falsified loan documents and then offers the defense that. . .no-one believed them anyway so who did I hurt? How can you expect them to understand esoteric gender discussions?
I haven't cared for Biden since he cut the Clarence Thomas hearings short because . . .so what if Anita Hill has provided testimony that the man is unfit, he deserves a chance to prove he's morally upright.

If you watched the Republican debate you would have heard Pence state that he wants to ban all Transgender Chemical or surgical surgery, whatever the hell that means.
He doesn't scare me. What scares me is the other six on stage that night who didn't argue with him.

I also grew up in a very vanilla world. My father was a bank manager, my mother a school secretary. We lived in a very white, middle class English village. I had a couple of female teachers who lived together. This was the ‘70s, and nobody thought anything about it. Looking back, it was clear to me they were both lesbians, but, like, so what?
I first became aware of transgender people with the the James Bond movie For Your Eyes Only in 1981, and read about Caroline Cossey, the stunning “Bond Girl” in a white bikini walking by the swimming pool. It really opened my eyes, and made me realise I might not be quite as “normal” (!) as I thought. Unfortunately, by that point I was already 6’1” tall and well on my way to looking like a very typical masculine man. Oh well……
I was insensitive.

Grew up in the late '60s
It seemed that no one accepted trans (not even a existing term) back then. I was surprised that even the hippie fringe group didn't accept the idea of male to female individuals. Free love - great, lesbianism- okay, gay men - not so much, crossgender - very NOT okay. Fortunately I went to Norway, where I found a very accepting relative (W2 Norwegian war hero, no less!) that pulled some strings and played on his war hero status to get me taken care of. Started the summer as a he /with US passport. Went back to school as a she/ with Norwegian passport and birth certificate. Easily reclaimed US citizenship and got everything as a natural women. By now my records are probably buried in the old Norwegian back files. My previous files just end, my after change files show me as a female that had dual citizenship and opted for US citizenship.
Was I lucky? Extremely so! Not something anybody else can do, I expect. Not pretty, but a charming Norwegian accent. :<)
