Likely someone’s password was gotten
Some reminders: use a long password, don’t use one password on multiple sites, change your password if there are signs it has been compromised, use a secure password manager if possible. If you can afford security keys, use them on sites that support them and be sure to set up a backup key.
No need to steal
There is no need to steal passwords. Anyone can create an account and then post whatever they want.

We don't have that Big Angry Face reaction like Facebook does.
Spammers are >THIEVES<.
They STEAL our time, attention, Admin/Moderator TIME, patience, Front Page 'real estate', pushing down real stories ...
And probably steal disk/Server space until manually, forcibly removed. Said removal effort being another THEFT of Admin time.
