I choose to publish with Smashwords rather than the dreaded A. Over there, they want to take total control of your story and then it only gets offered on KDP (Amazon), whereas Smashwords distributes to a large number of eBook retailers. What's more, you retain all rights to your book. You can publish it elsewhere in any format you like and still leave it on Smashwords.
