The ABC news story seems to say that with AIS certain things happen and that's the only way they happen. They might be correct, however I've read of all kinds of variations of morphology connected with AIS. I think much of what I read was from books published in the nineties or earlier. Perhaps what was described was thought to be AIS, but more modern science has other explanations.

Anyway, I recall descriptions of ovaries that were a mixture of ovarian and testicular cells. Some individuals did have other female reproductive organs, and, very rarely, an AIS womyn would give birth.

A possible explanation for this seemingly contradictory information is a claim I read about that a single gene was responsible for the start of the development of the testes. If there were a substitution or deletion (of a base pair) in a critical area of that gene, the gene would not function. The individual would probably have a normal looking Y chromosome and her femininity would be blamed on AIS. I think I only read the claim once. It might have been incorrect. It might have been a conclusion drawn from an experiment that has since had a different and more plausible explanation.

I feel like a jerk, blithering away and not bothering to just research this on the web.
