II just read a book called "the conclave" by Robert Harris. It has a surprise ending that might be of interest to readers here. Warning! Do not read if you are a Catholic who thinks that there is anything but politics at work in the election of the pope.

Traditionally

Patricia Marie Allen's picture

Traditionally the cardinals would gather around a table in a closed room. Each would place a candle in front of them, light the candle, bow their head and go into prayer. They would wait for the Holy Spirit to blow out one of the candles. The cardinal whose candle had been blown out, would become Pope.

Then there came a time when all the candles burned to the end without the Holy Spirit blowing one of them out. So they took a vote. It's been that way ever since.

Bet

there was a lot of heavy breathing toward the candles.

Heavy

Heavy breathing? The Holy Spirit entered them, and set them into noisy convulsions of ecstasy? Probably silent convulsions of ecstasy.
