I had to put down my little girl Pepper(cat) this morning. She had kidney problems that she was meds for but it wasn't working and she was not eatting or drinking. This morning I found her trying to find a place to die in my house.
Bringing her in while mewing was so dam hard it broke my heart to pieces, again. My friend had to be there while they put her to sleep I just couldn't do that again. Holding my mother's hand all those years ago was so traumatizing. Doing that to my little girl I just couldn't.
Paying out almost three hundred hurt me pocketbook wise as well.
After my mom, step mom, dad passing away and a cousin this year I just hurt so much.
But I will buck up like a good boy and not cry.

I'm saddened by your recent losses
While I was away and fighting off my depression and anxiety we had to put down Martin's cat Caramou last year. Martin had had him for over 17 years and he was sick and suffering when we finally had to put him down, on Martin's birthday of all days. Despite me not being around him for most of his life and him usually not taking well to new people, we had bonded immediately and were very close. If Martin was out and I was lonely or depressed he would always be there to cuddle and never leave my side the entire time. Not having that companionship when you need it most, and having to do that with a pet you're very close to can be devastating, especially when you're already suffering from other losses.
My heart goes out to you and I hope that things get better soon for you Jaci.

I had to say goodbye to my 19 year old siamese
last month, basically he died from old age. I've had him since the millennium. It always hurts, but it is part of the bargain, they give us love and happiness, We give them a good life, and if we really love them, a gentle ending.

Let out you grief, holding it in is not healthy.
So many of us here share your loss.
I would wager that better than 75% of those of us who frequent Top Shelf have lost a furry child or more than one.
Take comfort in the wonderful life you gave her and the merciful end you gave her. She'll be waiting for you... just on the other side of that Rainbow Bridge, along with so many others just waiting for their human subjects to finally show up with can openers.
There are those who say you should go right out and adopt another cat. There are those, like me, who are too close to their own waranty running out who fear leaving a pet or having to send another one to the Bridge.
All I can tell you is that it's up to you. Grieve, until you feel it's time to think about one or the other of those paths.

A New Pet
Catherine, may I suggest a Guinea Pig, AKA Cavy, for you? Life expectancy is roughly 5-6 years and they are affectionate. Gentle handling yields happy sounds. Guinea Pigs will pine, if not handled. Handling them induces the same relaxation response in humans as is obtained with dogs and cats.

We Hurt only if we share our love and heart with them
There is no easy way to say goodbye to one of our four legged friends who shared their love and their life with us. I've been blessed to have so many and every single one of them was loved without reservation which they reciprocated in kind.
Because we are closing in on the final chapters in our own Book of Life doesn't mean we need to give up on four legged friends. Make arrangements for them to go to a loving home if it comes to that. Don't stop sharing, loving, and caring.
