I'd already been out on my new bike, the carbon fibre job, which flies like a rocket when my legs have the energy to pedal fast enough. It had been spitting rain and I wondered if I was going to get caught in a deluge, like the one which prompted me to start writing 'Falling off a bike'. But the clouds passed over.

I mowed the grass in my back garden and still had some energy to spare so I thought I'd take Dolly out for a ride, this was the bike I was riding when I got soaked that day, which prompted... you get the message, I was also riding her at the Gabycon. I decided I'd do my short route, just over 7 miles.

About three miles out, the road was closed with police notices. It had been open earlier because I rode through there on Ruby (my new bike). To turn around would have been boring and besides bikes can squeeze through things that cars can't. About a mile later, I could see loads of police, fire tenders and ambulances - oops! Cycling up to the nearest field entrance, I lifted Dolly over and climbed the gate.

I had to walk about a mile across the fields to avoid the accident. Some smallish car had hit a tractor head on, both were burnt out and the way the police and firemen were poking around in the car, somebody was still in it. It left me feeling rather down. I ride that road several times a week in good weather, tractors are up and down it all the time. I had one overtake me earlier along the same stretch. Car drivers often speed along it, especially youngsters - more testosterone than brain cells. I guess the driver of the car didn't have that problem any more.

WWCD?

I'm glad you didn't pull a "What Would Cathy Do" and crawl into the burning wreck. We don't want to lose you.

Angharad, Take Care Please

It is such a waste when when such accidents happen.

Cycling...

...seems one of the most dangerous sports these days. It can't be repeated enough - Take care while being on a road! I know you are the one taking care (unlike me who is constantly trying to go just a little bit faster every time), yet the real problem is, car drivers seem only to care about themselves.

One could say it was 'natural selection', but that would not only be mean, it would probably also be very unfair, not knowing what really happened. Are there any families, children...?

So please bear with me, when I repeat myself now: Please take care of each other!

I have the good fortune to live near the Withlacoochee State Trail here in Florida, part of the Rails-to-Trails Conservancy. With 46 miles of paved-over railroad right-of-way it's the longest trail in Florida and offers a safe place to bike, walk, jog or roller blade. It's not uncommon to see deer, raccoons, armadillos and other wildlife -- no bears ... yet, but you do have to watch out for the kamikaze squirrels (they like to play chicken).

Wisconsin supposedly invented that

The Sparta Elroy trail, 33 miles, three tunnels, fine crushed packing stone surface was the first in the US -- aquired in the mid 1960s from the Chicago Northwestern -- and is part of several thousand miles of them in the state.

It will be in Timeout 4, Chapter 12.

I agree, off-road trails are the best, Cars are a menace.

Oblivious drivers

It never ceases to amaze me how 'out of it' car drivers can be - behaving like they're sitting on the living room couch, listening to their music, talking on their phone or texting, reading a book, watching a video.... just some of the crazy things I've seen people doing while supposedly 'driving' their car/truck/suv....

Now it's biker season in New England - motorcycles everywhere. Most of the accidents that occur are due to the above mentioned mobile couch potatoes, but a number of them are due to the 'outlaw' wannabes on their hogs (Harley motorcycles), driving down the center of the road, or after drinking, or while otherwise pushing the limits on reality....

Push comes to shove, I'd rather buy the farm out on my peddle powered bike, braving the slings and arrows of outrageous operators, than die of a heart attack after sequestering myself away as a hermit to avoid road idiots.

How about the guy that passed me at 80 miles per hour watching a movie on his laptop computer which was on his lap.
